School of Design and the Built Environment
Curtin’s School of Design and the Built Environment (DBE) provides teaching that values design, sustainability and community development; encourages individual approaches to visual ideas; and celebrates future possibilities.

The school prides itself on its extensive facilities ensuring students receive a modern and well-equipped educational experience. Our facilities include the Curtin Hub for Immersive Visualisation and eResearch (HIVE), 3D printers, an etching press, photographic darkrooms, a wood and metal workshop, and a large variety of industry-standard software.

The newly constructed home for the school which opens in January 2022 will support collaboration and showcase creativity and innovation.

This new state of the art building includes a diverse mix of technology-rich formal, informal and specialist learning and teaching spaces in addition to a makerspace, exhibition area, workspace for DBE staff and industry and retail space.

In addition to dedicated learning and research spaces, the five-storey building is designed with exposed mechanical, electrical and hydraulic services and structural elements to help students understand how buildings function.

Your new role
In your new role of Technical Operations Coordinator, you will be responsible for the effective planning, organisation and coordination of the technical resources that support teaching, research and consultancy activities within DBE, particularly in the schools new building.

You will play a key role in implementing and operationalising new processes, workflows, and spaces and will work with students across the trilogy of spaces in the new building the MakerSpace, the Exhibition Spaces and the Collaboration Hub. All applicants should be aware that Curtin University works in a safety-first culture.

Additionally, as the school will be moving into a new building with additional floorspace, new space typologies and equipment, we require new skills. Ideally, you will have experience in one or more of the following areas – if so, we want to hear from you!

Digital Fabrication
Technical support is provided for class activities and student project work associated with digital fabrication from concept to fabrication, to finishing and management of the project within the school; establishing and nurturing a vibrant community of confident hands-on makers and fostering a student-centric environment that promotes an open, investigative, experimental, and interdisciplinary approach to making.
 
Digital Technologies
Technical support is provided for class activities and student project work associated with digital technologies area/s within the school, establishing and nurturing a student centric digital studio culture. You will be required to provide support in the production and setup in VR/3D printing/Specialised Computing, e.g. rendering, programming, electronics), as well as content generation and monitoring of online platforms.

Curation
Technical support is provided for the display and curation of both digital and physical student work within the school to foster an open, investigative, experimental, and interdisciplinary student centric environment; enable dynamic production outputs (both in teaching and research) to be articulated in digital format, and assist academic and teaching support staff with the collection and collation of student work samples for accreditation of the schools courses/majors.

Essential knowledge and skills

  • A relevant degree in an Arts/Humanities discipline and considerable relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education training.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills with the ability to plan, coordinate, lead, support and develop staff and create a collaborative team environment in order to achieve overall work area goals.
  • Highly developed organisational skills with ability to plan and organise self and others to ensure timely completion of activities and tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate as a senior team member and contribute to the overall management and objectives of the School.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the use of specialised teaching and research laboratory equipment.
  • Sound knowledge of computers and information technology in the context of university-level teaching and research activity.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to offer solutions to complex operational issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and commitment to ensuring, Occupational Safety and Health practices and regulations are followed.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in a university academic or research environment.
