About the opportunity

The Faculty of Science is one of six faculties operating within the University and includes the Schools of Chemistry, Geosciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Psychology, the Sydney School of Veterinary Science and the Unit for History and Philosophy of Science. The School of Chemistry is seeking a Technical Officer to support the Frist Year Chemistry Teaching Laboratories, working as part of the teaching technical team to ensure smooth operation of these laboratories with student enrolments exceeding 2500 per semester.

Your key responsibilities (but not limited to) will be to:

  • provide laboratory teaching support and assistance to coursework students and others working in the laboratory.

  • maintain the laboratory workplace ensuring that the learning and teaching requirements of the work area are met effectively

  • ensure laboratory is compliant with Workplace Health and Safety requirements

  • prepare reporting and documentation for the work area

About you

  • completed a degree in Chemistry or has equivalent combination of relevant experience and or/education to work in a chemical laboratory, with a willingness to undertake further training and/or studies to better develop their skills in laboratory techniques/methods

  • experienced in the operation and maintenance of a suite of laboratory equipment including spectrophotometers, FTIR, and rotary evaporators

  • possess good verbal and written communication skills, with proven ability to apply theoretical knowledge and techniques to meet the key accountabilities

  • can work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work

  • strong planning, problem solving skills and organisational skills and the ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement and ability to prioritise workload during busy periods
