The Recombinant Products Facility (RPF) provides services and training in the production and purification of biologics (including proteins, nucleic acids and bacteriophage). The Facility manages and operates state of-the-art equipment including microbial fermentation, cell culture, mid-stream processing including TFF, process chromatography, HPLC and a range of analytical equipment. The Facility operates under an ISO9001-accredited Quality Management System (QMS).

The Technical Officer will provide technical and general support for the Recombinant Products Facility in providing access to high quality research infrastructure, training and provision of services to industry under an ISO9001 environment. This will involve support in running small scale expression, bioreactors, making media and buffers, chromatography, undertaking a range of assay to characterise the purified biologics. This role will also provide general support to the facility operations such as equipment maintenance, inductions and general laboratory housekeeping.

The Technical Officer reports to the Manager, Recombinant Products Facility (RPF) and has no direct reports.

About the successful applicant:

You have a relevant tertiary qualification in a scientific discipline or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience, as well as:-

  • Demonstrated proficiency in calculations relevant to the role such as calculations for preparing media, buffers, stock solutions, samples dilutions for assays.
  • Experience in protein biotechnology and knowledge of fermentation, cell culture, molecular biology, protein chromatography, protein analysis.
  • Experience working under a documented Quality Management System (QMS) and in industry is not required but highly desirable.
  • Strong attention to detail and a rigorous approach to experiment documentation.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and productively in a team including on the same project.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills including the ability to prioritise work effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to liaise with a diverse group of individuals.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
