 The Opportunity

Chronos is based around an Ionplus MICADAS (Mini Carbon Dating System) accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS). The facility was developed in collaboration with researchers at ANSTO and is in a state-of-the-art purpose-built laboratory at the Kensington Campus of UNSW, part of the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre . The facility includes equipment for chemical sample preparation, graphitisation for AMS dating, and stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS).

The facility provides analytical research support to researchers at UNSW, within Australia and in institutions internationally, as welk as commercial radiocarbon analysis to archaeological consulting companies and industry. Reporting to the Chronos Director, you will support laboratory operations and perform chemical pre-treatment to enable IRMS and 14C measurements on the MICADAS accelerator.

About the successful applicant:

You have a relevant tertiary qualification and or experience; knowledge of earth sciences and chemistry will be highly regarded.   You can also demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Chemical analytical techniques, including implementing sample pretreatment protocols. Experience in radiocarbon dating or analytical mass spectrometry will be viewed favourably.
  • Proven technical capabilities in areas aligned with laboratory activities with a proven ability to apply knowledge and experience to analyse, investigate and solve technical and operational issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), including the ability to liaise with a diverse group of clients and university staff.
  • Experience working with, or training others within a inter/multidisciplinary research environment is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and flexibly within a team environment, show initiative and be able to work independently for long periods unsupervised.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
