About The Position

As a Technical Officer, you will provide high-quality technical support to staff, students, and VE College partners, contributing to teaching, learning, and commercial outcomes. You will work closely as part of a team of technical staff to ensure effective information flow, a service-oriented culture, and the organization of practical laboratory classes. Your role includes supporting the College’s learning and teaching activities, ensuring technical services and equipment meet new and emerging practices. 

You will participate in continuous improvement processes, provide feedback, and streamline services. Maintaining effective relationships with stakeholders, you will handle communication with internal and external contacts. Your responsibilities include preparing and setting up materials and equipment for practice classes in the biochemistry and biological fields, supporting the maintenance and operation of instrumentation and laboratories, and ensuring compliance with University Quality Assurance processes. You will also participate as an effective team member, engage in career development activities, and perform other duties as directed within the scope of this classification.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have: 

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in the field of molecular biology, cell biology or similar.

  • Familiar with operational procedures in a PC2 laboratory setting.

  • Proven working experience in molecular biological skills, including techniques, such as electrophoresis, PCR, cloning. Tissue culture skills are not compulsory but preferred.

  • Fundamental understanding of molecular biology with a high level of ability to troubleshoot.

  • Proven work experience in planning, organising and prioritising work in a busy environment with multiple and conflicting priorities and competing deadlines.

  • High level communication skills, with a proven ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and initiative, by working independently and with limited direction, as well as effectively within a dynamic team environment.

  • Proven working experience in the storage, handling and legislative requirements in a relevant laboratory.

  • Demonstrated ability to use information and communication technologies effectively, including Microsoft Office software packages, web and email software, database use.
