Under general to broad direction the Technical Officer will co-ordinate the Centre’s infectious disease (Syphilis) Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) Program that offers screening to high priority Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical services throughout Australia. The role provides routine to general program co-ordination by providing operator training to health care professionals and direct oversight of quality control and quality assurance frameworks for enrolled health care services. Additionally, the role will include development and establishment of online learning modules suitable for point-of-care education and training through a learning management system. This position has limited supervisory responsibilities.
The Flinders University International Centre for Point-of-Care Testing is a global leader in Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) and is recognised for expertise in POCT research and teaching encompassing chronic, acute and infectious diseases. The Centre’s research activities have made significant contribution to increasing access to health care and improving health incomes, particularly in Indigenous communities and rural and remote settings nationally and internationally.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Technical Officer, Infectious Disease (Syphilis) is accountable for:

  • The co-ordination and/or preparation of standardised training resources and co-ordinated delivery of training to support infectious disease point-of-care testing in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services;

  • Managing the data management and research support services for the assessment of Syphilis POCT program outcome measures in conjunction with key stakeholders;

  • Participating in infectious disease project planning meetings with key stakeholders;

  • Managing an internal and external quality management framework for infectious point-of-care testing in-line with regulatory and best-practice guidelines;

  • Providing complex scientific and technical support services to infectious disease point-of-care operators in a timely fashion;

  • Co-ordinating and managing the preparation and delivery of material for publication including government reports, refereed articles, newsletters and web and promotional material with key stakeholders in order to meet contractual obligations;

  • Contributing to the development of new knowledge leading to high impact publications in the field of infectious disease point-of-care testing;

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all supervisors, Centre colleagues, research assistant/s and administration officer/s within the Syphilis POCT program;

  • Some interstate travel may be required to deliver point-of-care operator training in order to meet contractual obligations;

  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • At minimum, a Bachelor of Medical Science or equivalent degree in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated experience in the delivery and management of point-of-care testing and its application in the primary care sector for infectious disease screening.
  • Ability to manage, analyse and reporting of diagnostic and as required, research data and keep clear and accurate records of such data.
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a culturally appropriate manner, with consideration to the culturally and linguistically diverse populations serviced by the Program.
  • Comprehensive practical experience in the development of diverse training resources and training health care professionals.
  • Experience in working autonomously under reduced supervision, as well as participating in a team.
  • Demonstrated strong computing skills with sound capabilities in use of all products within Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Sound information retrieval skills with the ability to conduct literature surveys and access web-based information.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience of pathology testing and the relevant national/international standards and requirements is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the implementation and development of online learning management systems is highly desirable.

Pursuant to Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016 (SA) this position has been deemed prescribed.  It is an inherent requirement of the position that the successful candidate maintains a current Working With Children Check which is satisfactory to the University.
