About the Role
The Technical Officer will work within the Melbourne Academy of Surgical Anatomy (MASA) in the School of Biomedical Sciences within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. This position is pivotal in assisting with the preparation of cadaveric material, as well as contributing to the procurement of medical imaging, within the MASA research program. Responsibilities include the preparation and upkeep of anatomical specimens, collaborating closely with senior team members to aid in the preparation of material and the recording of precise medical imaging data. This position will utilise a diverse array of technologies and resources to support the research endeavours.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with the receipt and associated cataloguing and maintenance of documention of cadavers and cadaveric specimens within the program
- Prepare (embalm, stain) cadaveric material using standard protocols and procedures, ensuring the safe handling of embalming and staining solutions, associated chemicals, and equipment
- Supporting the analysis of medical imaging data and developing accurate segmentations, ensuring representative models of understood human anatomy
- Maintaining clear communication with imaging collaborators and the MASA team to ensure an efficient schedule and throughput of scanning material.
Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a Technical Officer who is comfortable working with human body donor material and is capable of preparing material for high detail image scanning. You will have meticulous attention to detail, ensuring samples are catalogued and stored appropriately in accordance with established processes and policies. You should have to be able to work to tight deadlines, ensuring quality outcomes are still maintained. Experience in medical imaging analysis and segmentation techniques, with a strong emphasis on understanding human anatomy, is essential. Familiarity with mortuary procedures, embalming methods, and human specimen preservation techniques is highly desirable. Additionally, you should be knowledgeable about the Human Tissue Act 1982 and ideally have some familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C. Experience with laboratory information systems and working in a lab environment would be a significant advantage.
At all times, appropriate respect must be shown by the incumbent towards cadavers and cadaveric specimens. The incumbent must demonstrate a sensitive approach to the use of human cadavers and cadaveric specimens for teaching and anatomical examination purposes.
You will also have:
- A tertiary qualification with a major area of study in human anatomy or medical imaging
- Effective time management skills and the ability to prioritise and show initiative
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
