The Area

The Research School of Physics represents Australia's largest university based research and teaching activity in the physics discipline. Hundreds of academics, technical staff and students form the School's greatest asset, its people. This critical mass of researchers is of fundamental importance in fostering the kind of interdisciplinary interactions that create modern research excellence.

Research School of Physics at the ANU hosts the ACT Node of ANFF. All the facilities within this Node, which are worth approximately $20M, will be moving into a purposely-built building in a central state-of-the-art cleanroom in mid-2022. The $210M building represents the single largest investment in infrastructure the University has made since the foundation of Physics in 1950.

The ACT Node of ANFF is based in the department of Electronic Materials Engineering within the Research School of Physic s.

The Position

The Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF) was founded in 2007 to provide access to micro and nanofabrication equipment, essential to Australia’s scientific future. It was one of nine original research infrastructure facilities established under the Commonwealth’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).

The Technical Officer position provides technical support for the facilities of the ANFF ACT Node and the new Physics cleanroom, such as the epitaxial growth facilities, plasma etching/deposition tools, focus ion beam, atomic layer deposition tool, sputter deposition, electron beam lithography systems and nanoimprint lithography system. The main responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to: 

  • Undertake service, maintenance and repair of ANFF and cleanroom facilities
  • Design and fabricate specific experimental equipment, components and accessories as required for research and education
  • Assist with the management of the upkeep of the cleanroom and ANFF laboratories
  • Design, prepare and install new research equipment/infrastructure

The Person

To excel in this role you will have demonstrated:

  • Experience in the design, installation and maintenance of toxic gas handling and vacuum systems related to scientific instrumentation, including competency in Computer Aided Design software
  • Ability to provide technical support to facility users on the safe use of facility equipment and instrumentation, including general facility/workshop equipment, and a strong understanding of WHS and regulatory requirements
  • Proven information technology and organisational skills with a demonstrated ability to keep accurate records and prioritise tasks, exercising sound judgement to meet tight timelines.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team and with a diverse range of facility users, and demonstrate initiative and effective problem-solving skills
