About Business Services 

Business Services provides a full range of class leading information technology, facilities management, finance, HR and health and safety services to all operating entities of the University.

Within Business Services, the Research Domain develops and strategically manages the information technology needs of researchers across the University by providing project delivery, uplift, management and support for core and enterprise research systems. The Research Domain Systems Team, provides the design, development and support of research enterprise applications and services within the University of Melbourne. Our DevOps team encompass the software development, testing and support processes within the software development life cycle, as well as implementing and maintaining continuous improvement/continuous deployment (automation) tools.

About the Role

As Technical Lead, you will promote DevOps principles and manage the design and implementation of software. You will also manage the support of the continuous integration and continuous deployment tools within the DevOps team, including automation test, deployment, and monitoring tools.

In this newly created role, you will support a wide range of stakeholder in diverse tasks - from hands-on BAU responsibilities to unique project work supporting world-leading research. You will lead and mentor a team of three direct reports, encouraging and embodying our collaborative and high-performing team culture and strong customer-service orientation.
In collaboration with your colleagues, you will establish DevOps and agile principles for the Research Domain Systems team and beyond.

As a team, we are always looking to improve our service delivery and you will further drive this continuous improvement mindset by identifying and reducing any bottlenecks or inefficiencies in the DevOps team.

In a typical week at work you may:

  • Guide the software development lifecycle – design, build, test and operationalisation for the team
  • Keep abreast of current and emerging DevOps principles and practices in addition to promoting DevOps mindset across the wider Research Domain teams
  • Be a key contributor and participant in prioritising and planning of the DevOps team’s backlog of work
  • Promote the support of secure and scalable architectures
  • Manage all software delivery via the continuous integration/continuous deployment tools
  • Implement automated and lean software development processes including quality assurance

About You

You will show an adaptive and intent leadership approach where customer focus is key and collaboration, high performing culture and continuous improvement are the core values. As a technical expert, you will have extensive experience and passion for building quality software and owning solutions end to end.
In exchange with your stakeholders - with and without technical backgrounds - you will adapt your communication style to your audience to confidently and proficiently provide expert advice.

Ideally, you will further have:

  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training
  • Knowledge in Agile Methodologies
  • Knowledge in DevOps principles and tools
  • Establish strong verbal and communication skills; with proven ability to adapt to multiple stakeholders from varying contexts
  • Must demonstrate extensive familiarity with the technologies such as Python (Django/Flask), Java, .Net, React/Angular, Javascript/JQuery/CSS/HTML, Gitlab/Bamboo, Docker, AWS and Splunk.
  • Must have experience in the automation, configuration, and application performance management tools such as Ansible, VMWare, IPAM and Rancher.
