The Position

Geophysics Area  at The Research School of Earth Sciences, The Australian National University  is seeking to appoint a Technical Assistant at the Warramunga Seismic and Infrasound Research Station, with a ~40 km daily commute from Tennant Creek, Northern Territory

The Research Station operates a 24-element seismic array and an 8-element infrasound array as part of the International Monitoring System for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO). Data is transmitted by satellite link to the International Data Centre in Vienna. The Technical Assistant is responsible for supporting the Operations Manager in the operation and routine maintenance of the Warramunga Seismic and Infrasound Research Station, Tennant Creek, Northern Territory. The duties include operating the seismic and infrasound monitoring facilities and servicing, troubleshooting, repairing and modifying a wide range of scientific, power system and communication equipment.

The Person

To excel in this role, you must either complete a Trade Certificate II or III with relevant work experience, or possess an equivalent mix of relevant experience and/or education/training in Electronic Engineering (or a similar field). This includes technical expertise in maintaining and repairing electronic equipment, as well as comprehensive knowledge of various digital and analogy electronics, such as UHF telemetry, PC systems, and mechanical equipment. Due to the remoteness of our facility, you will commute daily from Tennant Creek. Your ability to engage in fieldwork in harsh environments, which includes equipment maintenance and preventive measures such as vegetation slashing and firebreak construction and maintenance, is essential. A current driver’s licence (preferably 4WD) is mandatory. Your ability to lead by example and excellent communication and interpersonal skills will enable you to foster respectful and productive working relationships with staff, students and colleagues at all levels within RSES in line with the RSES Culture Statement .
