About the opportunity

Provides support to researchers and students using the animal science work area. Ensures that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards are met in the work area and are aligned to the University’s WHS policy. This role supports the teaching and research of the Animal Science units on the Camden Campus for SoLES, Sydney Veterinary School, and the Sydney Institute of Agriculture.
This position is designated as child-related employment. To be able to work in this role, you will need a current Working with Children Check or to consent to WWCC employment screening.
The staff member will work under close or direct supervision or, in the case of more experienced staff working alone, general supervision. Direction is provided and the jobholder has some discretion to choose between established processes provided set priorities and deadlines are met. They will be expected to exercise a degree of initiative and judgement in resolving routine problems associated with day-to-day operating procedures. They will resolve routine matters directly linked to their key accountabilities while problems that cannot be resolved quickly are referred to supervisors. The staff member will undertake some planning and prioritisation of duties.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • assist with the day to day maintenance/management of the Mayfarm pig herd based at Camden.

  • assist with maintaining livestock and physical resources associated with teaching and research within the Faculty of Science

  • provide assistance and support to practical classes and research being conducted at the piggery as directed

  • assist with record keeping associated with the piggery and support data entry

  • other duties that may be required appropriate to this classification

Required:

  • Q fever immunity is expected for the role. Q fever screening and vaccination will be arranged at the time of engagement.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
