  • Level 4, 0.1 FTE part-time appointment on an ongoing basis, with a flexible roster over peak periods.
  • Base salary range: $70,905 – $75,319 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the team
College Services provides academic administration and technical support services to the University’s schools, including Heads of School, academic staff, and research students. The team is committed to providing effective and efficient services in support of the Schools’ and University’s strategic objectives, with a focus on continuous improvement and best practice. Technical Services provides discipline specific, applied knowledge and skill sets to support UWA’s teaching and research goals in unison with our academic staff. This team of practitioners is focused on high performance outcomes, compliance and contributing to a pragmatic safety culture via the implementation of safe systems of work.

The team operates across a broad portfolio including teaching, fieldwork support, laboratory management, instrument/equipment stewardship, research training/design/optimisation and analysis, program coordination, and workshop design, manufacture, and repair. This team underpins training and learning across the broad Field of Education of “Physical Sciences” and may include disciplines such as chemistry, physics, and engineering including the curation of associated resources. This team supports teaching both on and off campus which may include fieldwork.

About the opportunity
As the appointee reporting to the Scientific Officer, you will, under general direction, provide a high level of laboratory technical support to senior technical staff and academics within the Chemistry disciplines with responsibility for the preparation, maintenance and cleaning of the laboratory teaching spaces and operations as well as providing assistance for the setup/pack down of laboratory classes.

Peak Periods
This position is 0.1 FTE during off-peak periods (20 weeks per year), and 0.6 FTE during peak periods only (32 weeks per year). Peak periods run from Week 6 to Week 21 and again from Week 27 to Week 42. While specific dates change year to year, you can expect to work 0.6 FTE from Monday, 5 February to Friday, 24 May 2024 and again from Monday, 1 July to Friday, 18 October 2024.

Note: This position will require you to fit the physical requirements of the position and some after-hours work may be required.

About you

To be considered for this opportunity, you will demonstrate:

  • Year 12 or equivalent competency.
  • Considerable relevant experience at an appropriate level.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Well-developed organisational skills and demonstrated ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in a range of computing skills including word processing, spreadsheets, email and online/internet-based systems.
  • Ability to work independently, show initiative and work productively as part of a team.

You will possess applied technical and safety knowledge within Chemistry or similar disciplines. You should also be familiar with general protocols for safely using various chemicals, inventory systems and workplace health and safety measures. 

To be successful in this position, you should demonstrate excellent communication and team working skills. You will also be a flexible and supportive member to your team and academic staff. There will be a strong focus to support applied teaching activities from a technical perspective within the Chemistry laboratory spaces.
