About this opportunity

The primary purpose of the position is to assist in the management of the School of Pharmacy's undergraduate and postgraduate teaching laboratories. This position also supervises two Scientific Officers. You will have a precise knowledge of the responsibilities and functional management of the teaching laboratories that provide scientific support for the School’s undergraduate laboratory practicals, tutorials and postgraduate coursework.

Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise the teaching laboratory Scientific Officers and monitor performance, work allocation, training and ensure staff development is maintained.

  • Develop and maintain a precise knowledge of the responsibilities and functions of the Scientific Officers to ensure assistance and efficiencies are maintained.

  • Allocate workload and ensure appropriate management of the Scientific Officers to ensure: Suitable and effective scientific assistance is provided during teaching laboratories; Effective liaison with Course Coordinators and academic staff to determine the requirements for the preparation and conduct of practical classes; Teaching laboratories, equipment and instruments are maintained in a clean and serviceable condition; Preparation for, and conduct of, ensuring teaching laboratories meet and adhere to relevant workplace health and safety standards.

  • Assist with the coordination of laboratory timetables, student allocation to practical and tutorial classes also ensuring that teaching related material such as practical notes and exam papers are available from Academic Staff/Course Coordinators.

  • Provide support for the development and testing of new practical’s and tutorials.

  • Develop, maintain and provide suitable training to laboratory tutoring and academic staff as required.

  • Plan, assemble, disassemble, remove and/or dispose of chemicals, reagents, equipment, instruments, demonstrations and any other materials required for each class in the teaching laboratories.

  • Closely support the Scientific Officers to ensure they provide training and/or troubleshooting methods of experiments and laboratory equipment in teaching laboratory classes to students.

  • Oversee the drafting, updating and revision of safe operating procedures, practical preparation notes, chemical and drugs register, chemical labelling, safety data sheets and risk assessments on a regular basis.

  • Maintain lists of consumables and other items required to support practical classes and raise orders.

  • Supervise the maintenance and monitoring of stock levels of consumables, biologicals, chemicals and drugs to ensure suitable stock levels available for teaching laboratories.

  • Assist with managing deliveries received through the Pharmacy loading dock at appropriate times as required.

  • Other duties consistent with the level of appointment in the job family concerned, as directed by the School Manager and/or Head of School.

About You

  • A degree in science or related discipline with subsequent relevant experience; or extensive experience and specialist expertise or broad knowledge in Pharmaceutical fields, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training

  • Demonstrated experience managing and supervising staff.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in the discipline of Pharmacy plus an understanding of the range of practical experiments and tutorials undertaken in the work area’s undergraduate and postgraduate classes or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge.

  • Competency in the use, demonstration and day to day maintenance of a broad range of scientific and technical equipment.

  • High level of scientific rigour, accuracy and attention to detail and the ability to test/troubleshoot new and existing experiments.

  • Ability to provide excellent client service in a teaching laboratory environment as excellent social, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

  • Excellent knowledge of the major areas of laboratory safety such as safety data sheets (SDS), chemical and drug labelling and risk assessment.

  • High level of computer skills with proficient skills in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Experience in the day to day maintenance and management of a laboratory.

  • Experience in forward planning, prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines and the ability to adapt and be flexible to the changing needs of a laboratory.

  • Current Senior First Aid qualification or willingness to undertake first aid training.

It is a condition of employment for this role that if you are required now or in the future, to work or interact in Queensland Health clinical facility; or in an equivalent clinical health facility; or health care role; or will be required to perform work tasks that put you at risk of exposure to vaccine-preventable disease you are required to be immunised against, and remain immunised against, certain vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) in accordance with the University’s Vaccinations and Immunisation Guidelines (PPL 2.60.08). The employee is required to provide evidence of immunisation against VPDs.

What We Can Offer 

This is a full-time, fixed-term position through to 31 December 2022 at HEW 6.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $82,399.95 - $88,503.79 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $96,407.94 - $103,549.43 per annum.
