Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a Sterilisation Laboratory Assistant - Environmental, Geological and Biological Sciences to join Faculty Operations, Faculty of Science, Academic Division.

This full time, on-going position will provide high quality, efficient and professional support to research and teaching through the hands-on operations of the Central Sterilising and Service Facility (CSSF) in GP-Q Block. The role includes proactive communication with the research and teaching stakeholders; daily autoclave sterilisation of laboratory waste; daily sorting, washing, drying and return of laboratory glass and plastic ware; and detailed and accurate capture of throughput records.

About Faculty Operations
The Faculty Operations organisational area consists of Professional Staff providing operational support to the faculty, and includes:
• Financial Management
• Technical Services & Space Management

The Technical Services & Space unit comprises of:

• Chemistry and Physical Sciences technical support team
• Environmental, Geological and Biological Sciences technical support team
• Space, Assets, Logistics and Technology support team Faculty Operations is led by the Faculty Operations Manager and is supported by the Senior Management Accountant and the Technical Services & Space Manager..

What you need to succeed

  • Education, training and/or relevant experience equivalent to completion of a Certificate III in Sterilisation Services; or completion of Year 12 with relevant work experience; or equivalent relevant experience or combination of relevant laboratory experience, preferably in a research and teaching environment.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to connect and collaborate with a range of diverse groups (including those whose first language is other than English) and work effectively within a team in a demanding and fast paced environment.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, particularly for the capture of electronic records, with digital literacy skills in a variety of software packages including the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to undertake repeated day to day operations including general housekeeping and administrative functions, such as keeping the area clean and free of clutter, removal of Clinical waste, completing stock takes and maintaining the supply of consumables, as required.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise and coordinate activities relevant to the day-to-day operations of the Sterilisation facility (running the lab washers and sterilisers).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory Health and Safety or comparable environment, with an ability to incorporate these principles in day-to-day tasks.
