About the opportunity
The Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Specialty Internship position operates within the Faculty of Science’s veterinary teaching hospital in Camperdown. The faculty provides a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in veterinary and associated disciplines. The teaching hospital provides the clinical learning experience for veterinary students and staff engaged in professional training programs. The hospital is a commercial centre and provides a range of veterinary services to the public.
The internship is designed to further develop the appointee’s skills in emergency and critical care, with a goal of preparing appointees for a future residency in the specialty as well as sitting the ANZCVS membership exam. Interns will spend their time on the emergency and critical care service, rotating through days, evenings, overnights and weekends. Weekday daytime rotations will involve direct oversight by an emergency and critical care specialist, while other shifts may have indirect mentoring by a criticalist or direct mentoring from an ECC resident.
Interns will participate in pathophysiology rounds and journal club designed for the residency program as part of their general duties. The specialty internship is directly supported by two emergency and critical care specialists and two ECC residents. Interns will provide primary care for patients presenting through the emergency and critical care service and will be involved with supervising and assessing final year students during their rotation on the service.
In this position, you will:
provide high quality veterinary clinical services to small animals
provide clinical teaching and support to veterinary students in the veterinary teaching hospital
supervise and perform routine treatment of hospitalised patients
provide excellent small animal services under the supervision of senior veterinarians in emergency and critical care.
The Sydney School of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney is ranked 2nd in the Southern hemisphere and 22nd in the world among veterinary faculties (QS rankings 2022). Regarding research, the faculty is the highest ranked veterinary school in Australia (ERA 5/5). About you

a degree in veterinary science registrable in NSW (or equivalent)
12 months experience in small animal clinical practice with emergency duties
experience working in a busy service oriented environment
excellent verbal and written communication skills
the ability to show initiative and manage competing deadlines.
