Full time, 3 year fixed-term opportunity for a Solicitor to join the University’s Office of General Counsel (OGC)

About the opportunity
We are in a period of exciting development within the OGC, striving to deliver expert and professional advisory services in support of the University’s strategic and operational objectives. As a result, we are seeking a Solicitor (Employment, Workplace Relations and Administrative Law) to join the team. Under the direction of the Director, you will provide expert legal advice, and will represent University clients in the areas of workplace relations and employment law.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
provide strategic, timely, commercially-focused legal advice to the Vice-Chancellor, senior executive officers, Human Resource leadership group and other University personnel
support a key University project in relation to compliance
provide expert advice in relation to the resolution of disputes and complaints
attend meetings with unions and other representatives of staff and students, and assist in the resolution of matters
review, draft and negotiate legal documents, to protect and enhance the University’s interests.
About you
extensive working experience as a solicitor with proven expertise in workplace relations and employment law
capability working with and interpreting complex industrial instruments, including enterprise agreements and awards (favourable)
experience in knowledge of and familiarity with the higher education sector (advantageous)
excellent analytical and legal research skills
strong drafting skills, and clear and concise communication skills to convey complex messaging to various audiences
highly developed relationship management skills and the ability to operate with a high degree of tact and professionalism across all levels of diverse internal and external environments
an agile and flexible approach that is able to pivot and contribute to overall program success.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
