Job Type: PartTime

PRIMARY DETAIL

. Join us in creating APATE, an innovative AI based tool to defeat phone scammers.
. Great opportunity to utilise your dev-ops/engineering skills in an innovative AI project.
. Part-time (0.5 FTE), 12 months, fixed term appointment

THE ROLE

This is a unique opportunity to join a research and development team at Macquarie University building APATE (apate.ai), an innovative AI based approach to defeat phone scammers. We are creating a system that pits AI chat bots against phone scammers, wasting their time. When deployed at scale, scammers will spend most of their time talking to AI bots instead of innocent victims, and thus putting phone scammers out of business.

We need your help in two key development areas: 1) dev-ops, where you will develop deployment scripts to enable dynamic scaling of our docker based AI phone bot and data analysis pipelines to field hundreds of thousands of calls a day; and 2) pipeline/AI development, where you will contribute to the creation of a real-time, adaptive and AI driven conversation system capable of fooling scammers.

We are a small and dynamic team, and your technical skills with Kubernetes, github actions and Linux based docker deployment or python application development and/or AI engineering in general will be called upon. Reporting to the Director, Macquarie University Cyber Security Hub, you will:

  • Design and implement scaled and resource efficient deployment of operational software in production settings (i.e. with real traffic) to facilitate large scale processing and data collection on cloud infrastructure.

  • Set up and deploy monitoring systems to quickly identify system issues and facilitate fast recovery.

  • Contribute to set up and maintenance of operational AI-based software, under computational-resource constraints with the aim of reducing costs of deployment.

  • Manage junior staff as required to fulfill accountabilities and project timelines.

  • Manage, maintain, and report on development milestones and project management forecast.

As a software engineer, you will:

  • Design and implement components of our AI driven real-time conversation pipeline primarily in python.

  • Maintain coding standards and contribute to code review

  • Identify, diagnose, discuss and develop fixes for technical issues that may occur.

About You

You are a self-starter with the ability to work to deadlines, an experienced dev-ops/software engineer with a flair for innovation who can bring your own project and technology expertise and your collaborative and excellent communications skills in a dynamic and fast paced development project. You will possess the ability to take on diverse technical tasks and run with them to a solution, an independent worker with a team spirit and focus on quality outcomes.
