  • Base Salary $97,975 + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Technical Officer to support and participate in the operation of teaching laboratories in immunology, bacteriology, and virology, and assisting in the management of the laboratories in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Immunology; as well as being responsible for general supervision of laboratory technical staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • schedule and assign work and develop priorities as a Team Leader, supervising and delegating workloads of technical staff, providing training and technical expertise as needed

  • contribute to the planning and maintenance of the Department’s facilities, including the purchase and service of equipment and monitoring laboratory spending

  • revise and maintain safe laboratory procedures as required by government regulators and University policy and, as the Department’s Safety Officer, provide OH&S general and specific safety information including biological and chemical hazards, waste disposal and radiation safety

  • work cooperatively with academic staff and technical staff in running laboratory classes, with a primary responsibility for implementation of immunology teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

About you

As a Senior Technical Officer, you:

  • possess extensive experience in a university teaching laboratory or a health department, medical research institution or medical laboratory, with supervisory experience involving professional laboratory personnel

  • possess the equivalent of Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biomedical sciences, including a knowledge of immunology, or a closely related field

  • have the preparedness to work under strict set deadlines, with occasional extended working hours; come into contact with chemical and biological hazards; comply with requirement to wear special personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • have knowledge of procedures applicable to university laboratories, including PC-2 environments, and possess knowledge of small animal handling

  • can work cooperatively and effectively in a team; plan, organise, coordinate, participate in and supervise varied projects; set up and participate in teaching laboratory classes; provide technical guidance to research staff and students; keep laboratory records and make safety reports; ensure proper safety precautions and procedures, analyse safety situations accurately and take effective action.
