The School of Mathematics and Statistics embodies a broad range of research interests in the areas of applied and pure mathematics and statistics. The School currently has more than fifty continuing academic staff and more than thirty research staff as well as visiting academics. Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW has been ranked number one in Australia for each of the past six years and has particular strengths in Dynamics, Optimization, Computation, Algebra, Graph Theory, Number Theory, Analysis, Data Science, Statistical Applications, Statistical Analysis and Methods. The school teaches approximately 10,000 individual students in 10,000 course enrolments over 150 active courses in science, engineering and other areas. For administrative purposes, it is split into departments of Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics.

The Senior Technical Officer will provide comprehensive and essential information services, including management and development of the school’s teaching and research laboratories, management of the school servers supporting the infrastructure. The teaching and research laboratory resources in the School include dual boot Windows-Linux systems with specialized software, and audio video conferencing equipment. This position also provides support both in person and remotely for customers of services provided by the computing centre. This role also has a strong WHS focus and is required to take a leading role with compliance and WHS requirements.

The role of Senior Technical Officer reports to Technical Laboratory Manager and has nil direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Implement and document policies and procedures for dealing with the future growth of and changes in the school’s support and operational needs.
  • Manage software and hardware resources to support teaching and research lab requirements for mathematics and statistics courses.
  • Support and coordinate with the Technical Laboratory Manager, University Central IT staff, external technical A/V staff, before and during high-profile events, ensuring availability and smooth runnin of all technical aspects.
  • Work directly with academic, professional staff and students to improve the quality of service they receive.
  • Provide support for networks Linux, Windows, and Mac computers, and software used by academic, staff, and PhD students, including troubleshooting networks, hardware, and software, and implementing operating systems enhancements to improve reliability and performance.
  • Manage and support the school’s teaching and research laboratories including but not limited to the coordination of efficient day-to-day management of equipment, infrastructure, and provide technical support for mathematical applications such as Matlab, Maple, R, SAS and LaTeX.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement, evaluating existing equipment, infrastructure, service delivery and training, as well as systems, procedures and protocols, and maintaining knowledge of current and future trends and technologies, to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs of equipment and infrastructure; and deploy new software needed using configuration management (Puppet) to computing labs and staff desktops
  • Maintain an inventory of all computing resources including hardware and software.
  • Meet with supervisor as needed to approve purchases, discuss planned upgrades, and review progress on the relevant duties and responsibilities.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

  • A Bachelor’s degree in computing, computer science, information technology, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Previous experience providing direct customer support in an enterprise help desk or service desk environment.
  • A broad knowledge of software technologies with experience in management Linux/UNIX system or DevOps background, including automation.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Red Hat or Ubuntu servers.
  • Ability to manage Microsoft Windows 10.
  • Experience with SQL programming, creating databases, or database server management, eg MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on complex tasks and projects with minimal supervision both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully exercise independent judgement and make informed decisions in resolving complex issues from both academic, staff and students in a timely manner. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts effectively with non-technical academic and staff.
  • Extensive experience in the policy, planning, operation, and maintenance of teaching and research laboratories.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, technical documentation skills, and personal interaction abilities.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

Desirable but not compulsory:

  • Demonstrated experience working with configuration management (Puppet or Ansible) highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in image deployment and maintaining those images (Puppet, PowerShell, Ansible, or other software) highly desirable.
  • Linux/UNIX system administration with knowledge of LDAP, Windows and Mac interoperability.
  • Knowledge of web servers such as Apache, Nginx.
  • Industry certifications RHCSA from Red Hat preferred.
  • Experience working in an academic or university setting.
  • Ability to deploy Microsoft Windows 10 and experience supporting Windows 10 users.
