About the opportunity

As the Senior Technical Officer in the Sydney Microscopy and Microanalysis (SMM) team, you will coordinate and supervise the technical operations of the research facilities for the work area including any related field activities carried out by the work area.

Your key responsibilities will be to: 

  • Report to the Faculty Manager and work within the Sydney Microscopy and Microanalysis platform Scientist team 

  • spanning across two areas in SMM, support researchers on scanning electron microscope techniques and x-ray microscopy techniques 

  • provide expert advice, sound technical research support and assistance to researchers, students and other technical staff working in the laboratory 

  • coordinate the laboratory workplace ensuring that the research, learning and teaching requirements of the work area are met effectively 

  • ensure facility is compliant with Workplace Health and Safety requirements 

  • train researchers in SEM and X-Ray microscopy techniques 

  • oversee the preparation of reporting and documentation, for the work area 

About you

  • tertiary qualification in a relevant field such as biology, medical science, or engineering 

  • research experience, including experience with developing research projects, experimental design 

  • scanning electron microscopy and x-ray microscopy skills preferred 

  • sound working knowledge of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratory environment  

  • strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with proven ability to work in a team 

  • ability to manage competing priorities and strong time management skills.
