Your role

The Senior Technical Officer is responsible for all technical workshops and training for staff and students, ensuring they are well trained before using the equipment and facilities of the SCD school (School of Communication & Design ).

The role will ensure that the equipment, editing suites, design & media studios, and all SCD labs are well-maintained and well-organized in a good working condition for students and for demonstration by academic staff during their lab activities. This position also provides high-level technical support to staff and students in the safe operation and use of our equipment and facilities. This role requires a solid technical knowledge of AV equipment and their integration and how they are used for studio and on-location production and in-house post-production. 

Key accountabilities

  • Develop and deliver AV equipment workshops and training for academic staff and students. Monitor the attendance and make reports to the School Leadership Team to ensure students and staff are well trained before using the equipment.

  • Conduct risk management assessments to proactively evaluate the physical environment of the school’s facilities on a regular basis.

  • Deliver technical support for preparation of classrooms and studio facilities for practical classes and assist academic staff in the delivery of classes.

  • Provide high-level technical support and advice to staff and students in operation and safe use of the AV equipment for loans, computer labs (Windows & Mac), Games Research Lounge, studio, and post-production facilities.

  • Manage the equipment loan services to students and staff, create and maintain accurate manuals, records, procedures, and policies for equipment loan and facilities usage.

  • Develop and maintain equipment inventory; ensure that all equipment is in a ready, serviceable condition to aid the school’s educational and corporate objectives. This includes developing plans for regular preventive maintenance, service, troubleshooting, and repair.

  • Cross-train and provide support coverage for the Maker Space & Fashion soft-lab when required.  

  • Provide expert advice for procurement of new equipment, hardware/software tools and materials/components, as well as setting up of equipment/tools service contracts. Lead the evaluation of technology pilots and troubleshoot where necessary to ensure successful completion and deployment.

  • Provide regular reports and propose solutions to the School Leadership Team regarding equipment that needs to be repaired or replaced, inventory and process issues.

  • Develop educational and promotional video tools as well as documentary photography and videotape for the School of Communication & Design.

  • Collaborate with the IT, OHS and Property Services department when required to ensure a smooth integration of the Department’s AV hardware and equipment with other IT related equipment.

  • Stay updated with the latest developments in relevant technologies and OHS guidelines.

  • Undertake other duties as directed by line manager.

Key selection criteria

  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Digital Media, Media Production, or a relevant discipline.

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of digital media technologies and their applications. The candidate must have a working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite and related post-production software.

  • The technical knowledge and ability to operate and maintain audio-visual equipment and media facilities.

  • Well-developed verbal and written English communication skills to provide excellent customer support to staff and students.

  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, resourcefulness, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision to ensure timely completion of tasks.

  • Knowledge of the educational and media/design environment in Vietnam and the ability to effectively operate in it

  • Knowledge of current Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and practices as well as relevant experience in their implementation.

  • Ability to display appropriate behaviours in line with the position, as per the RMIT Behavioural Capability Framework (Connectedness, Commitment to Excellence – Improve and Simplify, Imagination and Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Agility).

English Proficiency

  • The minimum requirement is IELTS with a score of at least 6.0 or 160 in Linguaskills.
