We are seeking a Senior Technical officer to join the Civil Engineering Technical Operations Team within Curtin University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering.

The University has extensive state of the art laboratory facilities supporting both teaching and research activities within the Civil Engineering discipline. We cover everything from microstructural analysis of materials right through to large scale testing of structural components. Key areas of teaching and research activity include:


  • Concrete, Asphalt and Pavement Technology
  • Soils and Geotechnical Engineering
  • Engineering applications of Bioactivated Materials
  • Water quality and Resources Engineering
  • Testing of structural components (e.g., beams, columns, and composite material)
  • High Speed Dynamic Testing (stress tubes and air cannon)
  • Earthquake Engineering and Blast Impact Engineering
  • Infrastructure Structural Health Monitoring

Your new role

As a Senior Technical Officer, you will be providing technical support for teaching and research activities within the Civil Engineering discipline.

You will supervise and provide technical instruction and guidance to staff and students, including guidance on the design and development of experimental processes using relevant equipment. This will include developing, implementing, and maintaining standard operating procedures, risk assessments and other documentation for all aspects of the laboratory operations.

You will coordinate the day-to-day operational requirements of the laboratory and workshop areas, ensuring effective allocation of resources for classes and/or research projects. This will include preparation of materials and setup of equipment for laboratory classes and research activities, maintenance of general and specialized laboratory and equipment, undertaking safety checks, and arranging servicing or repair as required.

You will have a strong focus on maintaining safety within the area will play an important role in ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations and specific statutory requirements related to the area’s activities.


You will have: -
  • Extensive experience in test procedures and equipment operation relating to Civil Engineering materials testing, the design and/or manufacturing of specialised laboratory equipment
  • Experience with experimental data acquisition systems and/or experience supporting teaching and research activities are highly desirable.
  • Degree qualification in Civil Engineering and subsequent relevant experience; or relevant trade qualification and extensive trade experience and expertise; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated organisational skills and experience in or the ability to manage the operational requirements of a small scientific facility, laboratory space or field station.

High Risk work licenses such as Dogging, Rigging and Forklift are desirable but not essential.
