The Senior Software Engineer leads, coaches and mentors other Software Engineers. The successful incumbent will contribute to the evolution of the software engineering disciplines; development, application architecture, operations, automation, testing and DevOps. You will provide consultation, solution design, development, support and governance for projects and teams, as well as leading strategic initiatives within the Software Engineering team and wider Digital Services division.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will:

  • Guide and empower a group of Software Engineers, offering leadership and support to colleagues, teams, and stakeholders to enhance their expertise, foster robust community relationships, and contribute specialised skills and knowledge-sharing for the attainment of top-notch results.
  • Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement of software engineering strategies, practices and standards.
  • Translating complex problems and issues into clear and understandable goals or targets and ensuring both technical and non-technical stakeholders are updated on progress of the work you’re leading.
  • Extensive software engineering expertise across a variety of languages, platforms and technologies with a strong record of leading and delivery outcomes
  • Actively encourage and coach others to question traditional assumptions, promotes ideas and review practices and policies and translate into workplace improvements.

Milestones you'll achieve in your first 6-12 months​:

  • Settle in, learn the Deakin landscape, get to know your team and how Deakin applies software engineering practices within its Digital department.
  • Get to know your key stakeholders, both within and outside of Digital Services.
  • Work with your practice members to understand and evolve software engineering practice services.
  • Work across and understand the digital framework, streams and teams to define and implement mechanisms for continuous improvement.
  • Coach, mentor and build connection with your team ensuring that they are happy and productive.                                                                                                                                                

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Extensive software engineering expertise across a variety of languages, platforms and technologies in a large enterprise and hybrid IT environment.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams, as well as agile delivery and DevOps environments with a strong emphasis on delivering exceptional outcomes.
  • Proven track record in people leadership and experience in guiding and managing teams is highly regarded.
  • Prior experience with the Callista student management system and familiarity with database management systems, particularly Oracle SQL, will be considered a significant advantage.
  • A strong inclination towards continuous learning and the ability to rapidly adapt to and master new technologies and platforms. We value candidates who are not just skilled in specific tools but are also eager and able to expand their technical repertoire.
