The Poche Centre for Indigenous Health at The University of Queensland (UQ) was established following a $10 million donation to UQ from Mr Greg Poche AO and Mrs Kay van Norton Poche. The Centre is part of the national Poche Indigenous Health Network, together with Poche Centres at the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, the University of Western Australia and Flinders University in Adelaide and Alice Springs.

At the UQ Poche Centre, we provide national and international leadership in Indigenous health research and research workforce development to improve life expectancy and transform health inequities and injustices in Australia and other international settings. We aim to create impact through engaging in collaborative research that addresses gaps and challenges identified by Indigenous communities, and building the capabilities of Indigenous health research communities in Australia.

About These Opportunities

We are at an exciting time in the UQ Poche Centre's lifecycle, with a rapidly growing team dedicated to progressing a visionary research agenda to achieve real outcomes that have direct impact and benefit to our community. We are searching for dynamic, inspired researchers to develop their own research program, attract funding, and build up a strong team around them. As part of this growth, we're looking to recruit multiple positions at Academic Level C, Senior Research Fellow, and Level D, Principal Research Fellow, across a broad range of health disciplines, including (but not limited to):

  • Epidemiology – particularly specialists in participatory, critical or Indigenous epidemiological approaches – across a range of endpoints, such as infectious diseases, chronic disease, mental health, nutrition
  • Health services research – particularly community-controlled health services
  • Qualitative and quantitative social sciences, particularly with disciplinary training in Indigenous studies, sociology, anthropology, international development studies, political science, economics or social psychology

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus , renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

To be successful in one of these opportunities, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Completion of a PhD in a discipline area fitting with the Poche Centre's strategic priorities.
  • An established research profile, including national recognition in your areas of expertise.
  • A record of successfully seeking, obtaining, and managing external research funding.
  • A strong track record of principal supervision of Honours and HDR students to successful completion.
  • A growing record of meaningful internal service roles, as well as strong contribution to external activities.
