Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a Senior Research Associate to join School of Communication, Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice, Academic Division.

We are currently seeking applicants for a Senior Research Associate (SRA) to work within the Australian Research Council Discovery Project “Understanding and Combatting ‘Dark Political Communication’”. The project, led by QUT researchers, and including a team based at Deakin University in Melbourne, aims to better understand the rapidly-evolving, and increasingly sophisticated, tactics deployed by political actors to manipulate public attention and opinion. Using both traditional qualitative methods (e.g. interviews, textual analysis) and large-scale, multiplatform social media analysis, it will culminate in an industry report that provides practical recommendations to journalists and other media professionals on how their practice can best respond to these emergent tactics.

We’re offering this role as a hybrid position as part of QUT’s commitment to embracing the opportunities created by a more virtual and connected world.

About us

QUT is a major Australian university with a global outlook and a 'real world' focus. We are an ambitious and collaborative institution that seeks to equip our students and graduates with the skills they will need in an increasingly disrupted and challenged world.

The School of Communication is ranked as Australia’s leading School of Communication. We are the number one School of Communication in Australia and in the top 20 in the world in the field of Media and Communication according to QS World University Rankings (2021). The School has established international connections including research and teaching partnerships with leading institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Brazil, China, Indonesia, and South Africa, among others.

What you need to succeed

  • Completion of a PhD in a relevant discipline area (e.g. journalism, political communication, professional communication) within the past 5 years at the time of appointment, not including periods of career interruption due to carer’s responsibilities, parental leave, illness, or disability.
  • A research track record that displays a sophisticated awareness of the global political media landscape, OR professional experience in journalism and/or political communications.
  • A capacity to work independently, and as part of a larger research team, to enhance both academic knowledge and industry practices.
  • High-level writing skills, with a track record of publications for a variety of audiences, including scholarly books and/or esteemed refereed journals.
  • Demonstrated capacity to undertake research that utilises a multitude of data sources, and/or a range of qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Well-developed oral and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and research collaborators, including presentations at seminars, conferences, and industry events.
