About This Opportunity 

As a developing member of the University of Queensland’s cLinical TRials cApability (ULTRA) biostatistics group, the incumbent will support the group’s methodological research program and activities on high impact clinical research projects whilst gaining experience from exceptional researchers.

The incumbent will provide biostatistical and programming support to methodological and clinical research activities under the supervision of, and reporting to, the biostatistics lead of the ULTRA group.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Biostatistics Trainee to commence a career in innovative clinical trial research whilst completing the Biostatistics Collaboration of Australia (BCA) Master of Biostatistics (MBiostat). The incumbent will complete the MBiostat part-time over 3-years as part of the traineeship. Tuition fees for units of study that are completed successfully will be covered by the traineeship.

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Perform sample size calculations for (adaptive / platform) trials and conduct simulation studies to evaluate the operating characteristics of different clinical trial designs and analysis methods under the supervision/direction of the project statistical lead

  • Prepare analysis plans, derive variables, program statistical analyses, prepare written reports, and support research dissemination activities (conferences and manuscripts) under the supervision/direction of the project statistical lead

  • Prepare datasets (with documentation) in a suitable format for facilitating statistical analysis by performing validation checks and appropriately merging data from different sources

  • Participate in quality control activities (e.g., review/validate the programming code of peers) and ensure statistical programming deliverables with documentation are archived appropriately

  • Work closely with the ULTRA team member, collaborators, and other stakeholders

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 3 years.

At HEW level 5, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $75,878.89 - $84,342.92 plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $88,778.30  - $98,681.22 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year. Tuition fees for BCA Biostats units of study that are completed successfully will be covered by the traineeship.  

About You  

  • Is eligible for enrolment in, or already part way through, the MBiostat at UQ as a domestic student and committed to completion

  • Has a degree majoring in statistics or other degree with demonstrable aptitude for statistical work

  • Has enthusiasm and aptitude for the application of statistical concepts to clinical trials research (especially involving adaptive designs and platform designs) and meeting the responsibilities of the role (see above)

  • Experience in statistical analysis programming in at least one software package (e.g., R), and demonstrated capacity to develop skills in other statistical software packages (e.g., Python, SAS, STATA, etc.)

  • Demonstrable ability to effectively communicate sophisticated statistical concepts, as well as clinical/biological concepts, in writing and verbally

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills

  • An ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • A demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise work

In addition, the following mandatory requirements apply:
