Pacific regions and strongly positioned in every facet of materials science and engineering. It offers undergraduate programs in Materials Science and Engineering (Honours), as well as a number of combined degree programs with Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Commerce.

The Senior Operations Officer is responsible for leading the effective operation of the Sustainable Communities and Waste (SCaW) hub, based in the Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology (SMaRT Centre) at the University of New South Wales. This role manages strategic planning for the SCaW Hub as well as coordination between various stakeholders of the Hub, ensuring SCaW’s strategic and business requirements are met and providing a collaborative operating environment for all researchers.

  • Level 7 ($106k - $115K) plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 12 months
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The Senior Operations Officer reports to the Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub leader and Director of the SMaRT Centre and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Provide a high level of project, administrative and business support to the hub leader in day to day activities, ensuring effective operation of the SCaW Hub.
  • Support the hub leader and steering committee chair with effective delivery and management of steering committee meetings and associated governance.
  • Meet regularly with various IP leaders to communicate and manage upcoming timelines and deliverables.
  • Act as coordinator between strategy leads, ensuring strategies are up to date, and coordinating with IP leaders regarding their research plans.
  • Coordinate with UNSW finance team to provide required information for annual research planning and annual reporting. Liaise with different hub nodes to provide required finance information.
  • Manage research planning preparation and hub resources to ensure timely delivery of research projects with outputs and outcomes that meet the objectives of the National Environmental Science Program (NESP).
  • Manage annual report preparation and submission.
  • In collaboration with key stakeholders, manage the development of research plans and associated monitoring activities across the hub.
  • In collaboration with the UNSW Finance Team, ensure financial accountability for all research activities in the hub.
  • Administer subcontracted research partner institutions and organisations and manage performance and financial reporting for the hub.
  • Build, develop and maintain collaborative and productive relationships between the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the hub and the Hub Steering Committee Chair.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A PhD degree in a relevant discipline with subsequent relevant experience.
  • Extensive experience in managing the complex operations of a research hub and engagement with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of research related activities, combined with experience and knowledge of managing a research program with multiple stakeholders.
  • Expertise in high level project and change management with proven success in planning, overseeing and managing projects involving research staff from multiple organisations.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, with high level managing expertise, and proven ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders to develop and sustain effective working relationships.
  • Highly developed organisational skills including the ability to work independently to set priorities, monitor workflow and meet competing deadlines whilst maintaining accuracy.
  • Strong financial management experience including developing and managing both operational and project budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to strategic planning, policy formation and implementation of effective operation strategy.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills, with the ability to synthesise complex issues and provide effective reporting and analysis.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
