The Senior Officer, Communication and Social Media role sits within the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and tells and shares the stories of Deakin while supporting the day-to-day operations of the media and corporate affairs team.

The successful candidate will be a passionate storyteller who understands the 24-hour news cycle and wants to help tell the stories of Deakin. That means sharing the latest research, programs and projects that will make a difference to lives across Australia and the world.

It means liaising with a range of internal and external stakeholders to help tell the stories that the community wants to read, hear and watch. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • The incumbent will support the development and delivery of corporate communication projects, including social media placement, to increase Deakin’s profile, promote thought leadership, highlight areas of strategic importance, and protect the University’s reputation.  
  • You will work tactically and proactively to provide communications support and partner across various Deakin initiatives and programs. 
  • The position also provides administrative support to the daily operations of the Media and Corporate Affairs team, including compiling and distributing the Deakin Daily News morning report
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of a multi-layered, proactive-focused media and corporate affairs strategy
  • Plan, write and edit content to support the successful delivery of corporate communications projects in partnership with a wide range of internal teams and external stakeholders 
  • Proactively build and maintain relationships with internal and external teams and stakeholders, and Deakin faculty and portfolio contacts, to support an end-to-end corporate communication partnering service
  • Provide advice and support to staff across the University and external stakeholders on communication and social media positioning
  • Support the administrative functions of the Media and Corporate Affairs unit, including the distribution of media content and compiling and issuing the Deakin Daily News report

To be successful, you will have:

  • A degree with subsequent relevant experience or a combination of extensive experience in communications, public relations or journalism
  • Strong and proven skills and experience in copywriting, designing, developing, editing and content management of promotional content and online content including websites, blogs, social media
  • Demonstrated ability to write and deliver content in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate projects and communication materials
  • Demonstrated experience in a range of communications design tools, such as WordPress, Photoshop, InDesign and content management systems
