About the opportunity

Sydney Microscopy and Microanalysis (SMM) is undergoing an exciting period of growth and are looking for an experienced Microscopy/Senior Microscopy Officer to join their team to support a variety of life science research and projects.

As the Microscopy/Senior Microscopy Officer - Multi-Modal Electron Microscopist, you will manage and maintain the suite of PC2 facilities and multi-modal microscopy research projects at Sydney Microscopy and Microanalysis (SMM). You will provide expert support to facility users and researchers, focusing primarily on the needs of life scientists in correlative electron and multi-modal microscopy, investigating the function and structure of living cells and organs of in humans, animals, plants, and micro-organisms.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • work within a dynamic team, reporting to the Facility Manager

  • deliver expert support to a variety of users of SMM facilities across several locations

  • ensure that the microscopes and laboratories are properly maintained, and that all equipment is properly functioning

  • ensure that all relevant WH&S standards are met and align with university policy

  • undertake the day-to-day management of research projects such as document preparation and data collection

  • conduct quantitative and qualitative data analysis, prepare reporting and presentations, and carry out literature searches for the work area

  • collaborate closely with key academic staff and users to ensure that the research, learning, and teaching requirements are suitably met

About you

  • post graduate qualifications (high level masters and above) in science, life sciences, or a similar field

  • experience and expertise in at least two of the following techniques: light, transmission, scanning electron and x-ray microscopy as well as correlation of these techniques

  • skills in advanced light optical techniques including super-resolution microscopy in addition to one or more of the following advanced electron microscopy techniques: electron tomography, cryo-SEM, cryo-TEM, serial block face SEM, array tomography, focused ion beam milling (FIB) and correlative light electron microscopy

  • experience in day-to-day running/operational issues of a multi-user laboratory including running electron microscopy, light/optical and specimen preparation in PC2 facilities

  • strong verbal and written communication skills, especially in scientific communication and the preparation of reports

  • strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships with users, relevant stakeholders, and equipment suppliers

  • demonstrated willingness to gain experience in and learn additional microscopy techniques.

The successful candidate for this role will be offered either a HEO6 (Microscopy Officer) or HEO7 (Senior Microscopy Officer) position based on their level of demonstrated experience in relation to the key requirements listed above and in the position description.
