About the Role

We have an exciting position for a Senior Metadata Librarian to join the Discovery Services Team within our University Library.

The Senior Metadata Librarian is a specialist role and provides leadership and expertise in maintaining, enhancing and applying metadata to the bibliographic records contained in the Library's discovery systems. These systems include the catalogue, and the institutional research outputs repository that archives and showcases UniSA’s research allowing it to be findable and accessible globally.

The University of South Australia Library

The University of South Australia Library supports the University’s teaching, learning and research mission through the provision of relevant information resources and associated services. The Library also coordinates copyright for the University. There are four campus libraries located at City East, City West, Magill and Mawson Lakes and an off-campus Library Service that supports regional engagement at Whyalla and Mt Gambier. Information technology and information resource management services are managed from the Mawson Lakes campus.

The Library operates in an environment of increasing availability of digital information in support of the University’s Digital Learning Strategy. As such, it has accelerated its commitment to acquire the vast majority of resources in digital format which are accessible and discoverable via an established next generation Library Management System. The Library has a growing research collection with over 700,000 eBooks and online journals available anytime, anywhere, on any device. The Library maintains a targeted, high quality print collection and is the custodian of several valuable special collections including the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Library.

The Library is operating in an environment of increasing availability of digital information and demand and plays a significant role in training staff and students in information skills.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide expert technical and metadata services to support the operations of the University Library’s catalogue, institutional research outputs repository, special collections and research data management strategy
  • Create, edit and maintain metadata records in relevant formats to support the discovery of, access to and management of the Library’s information resources
  • Perform high level complex cataloguing and database maintenance, as well as complex problem resolution for resources
  • Actively contribute to the development of documentation, procedures and guidelines
  • Work effectively as part of a team in a fast-changing environment and manage multiple priorities often with competing deadlines


Essential Skills and Experience

  • Strong experience in resource management including an expert knowledge of metadata rules, schema, standards, and the ability to create original metadata for information resources and data in all formats
  • High level interpersonal communication and presentation skills to successfully develop and manage working relationships
  • High level organisational, administrative and time management skills
  • In-depth knowledge of trends in metadata management, digital information, research data management and resource discovery
  • Tertiary qualifications in Information Management or a related discipline
