  • Base Salary $117,116 - $132,079 + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

As the Senior Mass Spectrometry Specialist, you will provide expert technical management and team leadership for Sydney Mass Spectrometry (SydneyMS), a core research facility at the University of Sydney. SydneyMS provides a suite of over 25 state-of-the-art mass spectrometers and supports research with global impact in the areas of lipidomics, metabolomics, proteomics and mass spectrometry imaging. Drawing on your strong technical experience, you will provide a collaborative approach to supporting key research activities and projects through user training, instrument maintenance, research activities and team management.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • work within a dynamic and expanding team, reporting to the Associate Director, SydneyMS

  • located at the Charles Perkins Centre (Camperdown) you will support SydneyMS activities, especially with regards to an expansion of clinical mass spectrometry applications

  • provide expert advice, sound technical research support and training to researchers both internal and external to the University, including industry who are working in the facility

  • experienced at delivering ‘fee-for-service’ analytical services one or more of these areas: proteomics, metabolomics or lipidomics

  • meticulous at record-keeping and instrument maintenance

  • proactively manage key stakeholder relationships and productive communications channels across the facility

  • provide effective leadership, expert guidance, and support to the SydneyMS staff and manage a team of 3-4 Mass Spectrometry Technical Officers

  • provide expert ‘omic’ data analysis advice and support to researchers in the facility

  • ensure reporting and documentation requirements for the area are effectively met.

About you

  • proven experience in the operation, optimisation and maintenance of mass spectrometry and/or liquid chromatography equipment particularly in the areas of life/medical sciences

  • demonstrated ability to supervise, train and provide mentorship to staff, researchers and students using the laboratory facilities to meet the key accountabilities

  • experience in the development and implementation of mass spectrometry approaches

  • demonstrated experience in the instruction of mass spectrometry techniques through seminars, workshops, and one-on-one training

  • demonstrated ability to build and maintain ongoing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders

  • extensive experience performing mass spectrometry data analysis

  • graduate or post graduate qualifications in Biological Sciences coupled with extensive technical experience in the liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry space.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the reasons for the position.
