About the opportunity

The Senior Manager, Data Science will lead a team of data scientists to deliver relevant actionable insights and machine learning solutions to empower Sydney University staff to deliver impactful teaching and research, drive sustainable performance, and provide outstanding student experiences.

As the Senior Manager, Data Science you will develop strong stakeholder relationships to understand opportunities and challenges. Provide support to your team in developing machine learning capabilities to deliver high impact and actionable insights. You will also ensure activities comply with governance and controls, and mitigate risks, and utilise experience, business acumen and problem-solving expertise to make decisions and recommendations on broad and complex issues which impact on the operations of the organisation.

This position has leadership responsibilities to guide, develop and manage a team of professionals, including managing performance and development and delegation of work activities. This is a key role in developing machine learning and analytics capability within university. You will have access to cutting edge technologies and a wide array of data sources to power our machine learning echo system.

The Senior Manager works under broad direction from the head of Data Science and Analytics and is expected to exercise a high degree of initiative and philanthropy to coordinate multiple activities and teams concurrently on projects, and resolve complex issues associated with delivery of highly scalable machine learning initiatives. You will utilise your experience in advanced analytics and machine learning to scope, plan, manage and deliver on a wide range data science projects.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • develop and maintain stakeholder relationships
  • partner with stakeholders to understand challenges and identify opportunities
  • develop machine learning and data science capability and solutions.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on the use of advanced data science techniques
  • apply best practice techniques in leveraging technology to deliver analytics products
  • manage a team of data scientists
  • collaborate across the wider Advanced Analytics, Planning, and Enterprise Data team
  • be a trusted partner to the wider university stakeholders
  • utilise our advanced technology suit and know how to provide collaborative outcome

About you

  • excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • postgraduate qualifications in data science, analytics, data, or other relevant field and significant relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
  • demonstrated time and workload management skills with ability to prioritise effectively, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and achieve required outcomes
  • superior analytical and machine learning project cycle management skills that will see initiatives through from ideation to implementation
  • effective managing a diverse group of key stakeholders on large projects
  • demonstrated experience in the development of data science and machine learning solutions
  • experience in applying technical capabilities to deliver insight and recommendations
  • deep understanding of the technical nuances of a wide range of machine learning techniques and their implementations.
