This Teaching Specialist (Clinical/Practitioner) position, with its primary focus on teaching and teaching- related activities drawing on contemporary/professional practice, has an important role to play in the University’s achievement of its strategic plan, Making a Difference: The 2025 Agenda.

As a medical practitioner, the Senior Lecturer will draw on contemporary clinical/professional practice to contribute medical expertise to the health professional education team delivering medical education across the Australian Central Corridor. The Senior Lecturer will specifically contribute to preparing a health workforce for the unique context of the Northern Territory, including remote and Indigenous acute and primary health care. They will be involved in developing the NT workforce pipeline, contextualising curricula, facilitating teaching and learning and engage with the professional and wider local community in line with Flinders University’s commitment to social accountability.
The Senior Lecturer will contribute to teaching and mentoring students across all years of the Doctor of Medicine and to pursue professional development and scholarship in line with their specific expertise, identified upon commencement.
The Senior Lecturer will also have opportunities to participate in case-based learning, simulation education, mentor clinical supervisors and identify potential training posts to enhance accredited supervision and training capacity across a range of health workforce development projects funded through the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Program (RHMT).

Key Position Responsibilities

This position is responsibility for teaching and teaching-related duties involving the creation, delivery, and continuous quality improvement of university-level education.  It includes, but is not limited to: direct teaching informed by approaches that enhance the student experience; curriculum design and review; delivery innovation; advancements in education technologies; and making an independent contribution to maintaining internal and external compliance and accreditation of courses.  The Senior Lecturer brings recent, ongoing, or extensive experience and knowledge of contemporary clinical/professional practice to the position.

The position is also expected to make an independent contribution to high-quality university, professional and community service.

Teaching:

  • Create, coordinate, and conduct inspiring teaching informed by approaches that enhance the student experience, across all levels and modes, of the College including academic and clinical skills training and/or supervision of students undertaking work integrated learning.

  • Contribute to the planning and evaluation of the clinical placement-based topics, undertaking the role of Topic Coordinator as required.

  • Make an independent contribution to the review, renewal, development, and design of curricula that are contextualised to the Northern Territory, remote and Indigenous health workforce and service delivery context.

  • Provide support, academic counselling and professional advice to students concerning their studies, professional development, and career opportunities.

  • Make effective use of innovations and technologies in teaching practice.

  • Collaborate with academics and clinicians across urban and remote sites to ensure vertical and horizontal alignment of clinical skills for all students of the NTMP, and where appropriate interprofessional collaborations.

University, Professional and Service:

  • Undertaking activities that promote the development of productive partnerships to provide opportunities for to advance graduate employability.

  • Providing clinical leadership for academic endeavours.

  • Identifying and supporting local health professionals to become supervisors.

  • Working with relevant staff to evaluate the impact of Flinders’ programs on workforce preparation and distribution.

  • Development of strong networks and working relationships with health services within the NT, specialist colleges, the University and other stakeholders to maximise the opportunity for shared learning and efficiency of the use of resources to develop a fit-for -purpose health workforce in the Northern Territory.

  • Representing Flinders NT on relevant local, College and/or University committees and participate in the wider academic activities of Flinders in the NT.

  • Maintain professional knowledge relevant to teaching within their discipline through scholarship and professional development.

  • Engaging in activities within a relevant external professional domain such as professional associations, conferences, and workshops, and within a wider community context at local, national, or international level.

  • Providing high quality contribution to community service, with a focus on opportunities that maintain clinical skills currency, education, and the health and wellbeing of NT regional, rural, and remote communities on behalf of the College and University.

  • Travel, both regionally within the Northern Territory and interstate is required for this position and may include travel in light aircraft and to remote areas. A driver's licence is required for this position.

  • There Is a need for flexibility on occasion in working hours, which may include working after hours and at weekends.

  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the role as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • A medical degree and current registration as a medical practitioner with the medical Board of Australia through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or eligibility for the same.

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent qualification, for example fellowship of a specialty medical college.

  • Demonstrated ability to practice and teach in a culturally safe manner, including the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and their representatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster and promote high quality medical education.

  • Proven track record and expertise in clinical education.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a complex environment of multiple stakeholder relationships, with experience of successful interactions with academics, health care organisations and with clinical and heath care professions.

  • Demonstrated high-level oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, which includes the provision of quality supervision and feedback.

  • Experience in vocational and postgraduate training environments and the building of training capacity (desirable).

  • Demonstrated innovation in curriculum development and teaching design (desirable).

  • Demonstrated leadership experience within the NT and medical professional context (desirable).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of hospital-based education training systems and protocols (desirable).

  • Experience in Remote or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (desirable).

  • A demonstrated commitment to social accountability in relation to health profession education (desirable).
