About This Opportunity 

The position will be responsible for providing high quality small animal emergency & critical Care services within the Small Animal Hospital situated on the Gatton campus. The appointee will participate in the management of primary accession and referral small animal emergency & critical care cases, and support cases being managed through other departments including primary care, urgent care, internal medicine and surgery where appropriate.

In addition to ensuring excellence in clinical care, the appointee will actively participate in the clinical teaching and instruction of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary science and veterinary technology students as well as clinical training of interns and residents.

The position reports to the VTH Clinical Director and Small Animal Lead Clinician.

Key responsibilities will include: 

Clinical Service

  • Provide high quality specialist/advanced clinical services in managing complex and difficult cases.

  • Develop and expand the referral, second opinion and primary caseloads in the hospital through enhancement of professional profile.

  • Provide leadership to the service and actively contribute to the professional development of clinical staff.

  • Provide an excellent clinical role model for students and colleagues.

Clinical Teaching

  • Provide leadership in the clinical training of undergraduate and postgraduate students, interns and residents.

  • Lead and promote dissemination of knowledge through Professional Development and Continuing Education events.

Leadership and Management

  • Take a leadership role in the implementation of the VTH's strategic plan and participate in its ongoing development and implementation.

  • Actively contribute to the daily operations and management of the hospital, and practice good business management.

  • Identify and contribute to opportunities for improvement within the hospital.

  • Other duties as directed by supervisor or Head of School.

This is a full-time (100%), continuing position. As a 24-hour operation, your take-home salary will be dependent on your specific roster, including loadings of 50% for weekend shifts, 25% for night shifts, and 15% for afternoon shifts. An approximate annual figure may sit in the range $165K - $172K base plus 17% super.

Afternoon shifts are shifts commencing at or after midday and finishing at or before midnight, Night Shift are shifts extending beyond midnight and finishing at or before 6AM. About You  

  • A Bachelor of Veterinary Science or equivalent, registrable in Queensland.

  • Eligibility for specialist registration in Queensland or experience of more than 10 years in Small Animal Emergency & Critical care including experience in leading and managing clinical teams.(**)

  • Commitment and enthusiasm for the education of Veterinary Science and Veterinary Technology students.

  • Capacity to serve as an excellent clinical role model.

  • An understanding and knowledge of veterinary health and safety requirements.

  • Ability to establish effective professional relationships and to represent the School of Veterinary Science to the university and wider community, including industry, government and professional bodies.

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, teamwork, negotiation and consultation skills and formal written and oral communication skills.

(**) Special Veterinary Registration

Eligible candidates with the right to practice veterinary science outside Australia may obtain special registration as a veterinary surgeon or specialist for research or teaching roles at the University of Queensland, provided they have the relevant qualifications and experience (under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1936, Section 19E).

In addition, the following mandatory requirements apply:

  • Work Rights: You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment. 

  • Mandatory Immunisations: It is a condition of employment for this role that you will be required to provide evidence of immunisation against certain vaccine preventable diseases.
