About the opportunity

The role of Senior Data Engineer & Technical Lead is responsible for leading, designing and providing the overall technical direction and roadmap for the University BI and Analytics data platforms, ensuring adherence to a standard consistent architectural framework, scalable and optimised to leverage both current and future capabilities to support the universities data science and analytics capabilities. The role will contribute to further develop and enhance the University’s current Data Lake/Data Warehouse.


This role will lead deep technical architecture discussions with project stakeholders and an experienced technical team that aligns with a cloud deployment and modernisation of data platforms to generate efficient data pipelines and computational processing. You will use your knowledge and expertise to build/extend the data platform environment that are aligned to the university strategy needs, and that enable and enhance our data analytics. The role will be the technical lead and provide guidance on the overall operational and support to internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal and minimal impact to the cloud data platform.

The role will be the technical lead to Data Engineers and provide guidance and solutions where needed in development and support. You will be leading the daily management and maintenance of all data assets that sits in the university’s data lake/warehouse. This role reports to the Senior Manager Data Engineering and provides expertise, knowledge and guidance on the components of modern data platforms for the University and develops innovative solutions to business problems by keeping abreast of emerging technologies.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • lead the design, data modelling, implementation and management of the Data Lake/Warehouse to cater for high profile projects and analytical work

  • lead and manage collaboration with stakeholders across key groups or individuals ensuring needs are identified and prioritised, and key requirements are managed in a professional and timely manner for projects

  • provide advice and support to technical resources in the design, development and execution of deliverables and work cross functionally with multiple business stakeholders in technical planning and delivery

  • lead the support and maintenance of the cloud analytics platform to ensure minimal down time catering for service level agreements

  • provide leadership and technical expertise while providing solutions in the areas of data management, Data Lakes, interoperability, application design, automation and compatibility across cloud platforms

  • undertake required research and analysis of emerging trends and explore the practical application of enabling technology to solve key business challenges and future ways of working.

About you

  • bachelors or Master’s degree in computing science or equivalent, relevant experience

  • strong knowledge in cyber security and network management for cloud platforms.

  • experience using an Agile framework, with knowledge of CI/CD practices and Support X

  • experience in working with large, heterogeneous datasets in building and optimizing data pipelines, pipeline architectures and integrated datasets using traditional data integration technologies including ETL/ELT, data replication/CDC, message-oriented data movement, API design and access and upcoming data ingestion and integration technologies

  • strong knowledge of Operating system, Cyber Security, Infrastructure and access management

  • excellent interpersonal and client relationship management skills

  • strong organisational, time and workload management skills.
