College of Medicine & Public Health
Under generally unguided direction, the Senior Clinical Data Scientist will have primary responsibility for the management and successful delivery of data activities, implementation, and delivery relating to projects implemented or supported by Health Data and Clinical Trials (HDCT) whether local, national, or international, This role will be required to provide strategic and high-level operational leadership to ensure data activities are implemented effectively, including budget development & contract review, and data team management.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Senior Clinical Data Scientist provides senior level data management services and strategic leadership to data teams to successfully implement data projects and activities. Within this context, the position’s key responsibilities include:

  • Overall responsibility for the successful planning, strategy, and execution of data-related projects and activities delivering complex requirements, in terms of cost, resources, training and performance management, problem-solving, change management, reprioritisation, schedule, quality, objectives met.

  • Responsibility for the delivery of large, complex data programs with state/national/global-wide impacts, typically comprising multiple, concurrently run projects.

  • Management of data & implementation teams of varying size, comprising both internal & external staff.

  • Establishment and maintenance of appropriate, positive relationships and communications of all formats within data and project teams, and between both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Development and delivery of data-related activities and documentation, including survey and database builds and analyses (R, Python, RedCAP, SQL, STATA, SPSS etc), data definitions and standardisation across differing datasets, CRFs, databases, datasets, collection and linkage, cleaning, mapping and harmonisation, data forecasting/extrapolation/analysis/reports, advice and production of key performance metrics, grant and ethics applications, data and analysis-related advice, data management plans, study reports, presentations and publications to both internal & external stakeholders.

  • Data and analysis-related advice to both internal and external collaborators to enhance their understanding and use of data requirements, definitions, documentation and programming code, whether via education sessions, reports, newsletters, or other.

  • Leadership in and establishment of the relevant and specific standards, processes, procedures, performance measures, definitions, and software for each project and activity, including how to programme, develop, test, use and export appropriately, in alignment with team objectives, ICH-GCP and 21CFRpart11 guidelines, and University expectations.

  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the role as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • A degree in health, science, or other relevant qualification and/or extensive relevant experience.

  • Extensive relevant experience of managing large, concurrent health data and/or clinical research projects to deadline and quality, in a complex, diverse and dynamic environment.

  • A high level of interpersonal influence and demonstrated ability to lead including effective strategic planning, task delegation, and staff performance management including unsatisfactory performance.

  • Development and delivery of data-related activities and documentation, including survey and database builds and analyses (eg via R, Python, RedCAP, SQL, STATA, SPSS etc), data definitions and standardisations, CRFs, datasets, collection, linkage, cleaning, deidentification, mapping and harmonisation, data and project forecasting/extrapolation/analyses/reports/advice, production of key performance metrics, grant and ethics applications, study and data management plans and presentations.

  • Comprehensive understanding and demonstrated experience in a wide range of data management and delivery methodologies and their application within clinical research, successful flexibility and adaptation of processes/procedures as required, and full and applied technical knowledge of statistical and data management software, plus an ability to drive change and innovation with emerging technologies.

  • High level strategic thinking, planning, negotiation, analysis and communication skills, including the ability to analyse and succinctly summarise complex research data for effective communication and reporting with both internal and external  stakeholders, and liaison with external developers.


Prescribed Conditions of Employment

Pursuant to Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016 (SA) this position has been deemed prescribed. It is an inherent requirement of the position that the successful candidate maintains a current Working With Children Check which is satisfactory to the University.
