About the position

The purpose of this position is to support a flagship research initiative at La Trobe University – the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility (APPF). Based at the La Trobe Institute for Sustainable Agriculture and Food (LISAF) in Bundoora, these two initiatives drive applied and fundamental research into plant biology for academia and industry.

The Australian Plant Phenomics Facility was established in 2009 under the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) to develop a globally collaborative plant phenomics capability that provides leadership in infrastructure, skills and service for agricultural research and industry to maximise the productivity in Australia’s unique and variable environment.

In January 2024, La Trobe University joined as a new APPF node, providing advanced plant phenomics services to industry and academia. The La Trobe APPF Node will exist within a cooperative national network of nodes that are coordinated from the APPF Central at the University of Adelaide.

Working in close collaboration with the Node Director and senior node staff, the Senior Business Administrator will ensure the efficient operation of the APPF-LTU node, manage human and financial resources, monitor performance, nurture stakeholder relationships and drive initiatives to continuously improve the facility’s service delivery and outputs.

They will also be involved in identification of potential funding opportunities and preparation of relevant applications and proposals. Working closely with the APPF General Manager Operations, the Senior Business Administrator will ensure the facility meets its contractual obligations under NCRIS, prepares budgets and financial reports, progress and performance reports, and contributes to ad hoc requests from the Australian Government’s Department of Education and Training, as well as contributing to funding opportunities and high-level policy documents.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have

  • A degree with substantial extension of the theories and principles, learned through experience; or a range of management experience; or postgraduate qualifications, or progress towards postgraduate qualifications with extensive relevant experience; or an equivalent alternate combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience.
  • Ability to be responsible for program/system development and implementation. Demonstrated high level of self-motivation and personal management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to form a detailed knowledge of academic and administrative policies and the interrelationships between a range of policies and activities.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and controlling budgets/resources/funding and an understanding of financial management procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including ability to negotiate, motivate, influence and build relationships.
