About This Opportunity
The Scientific Officer provides knowledge of analytical chemistry in support of the Australian Centre for Water and Environmental Biotechnology (ACWEB) at all stages of the research life cycle.
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated scientist to assist the ACWEB Analytical Services laboratory (ASL)’s analytical chemistry capabilities. The position offers scientific support, analysis and quality assurance to internal and external clients on a range of analytical chemistry instrumentation.
Key responsibilities will include:
Provide scientific/technical support on appropriate methods, equipment, quality assurance procedures, risk assessment and waste management.
Carry out sample preparation and analysis on the instruments to satisfy and accomplish research outcomes for internal and external clients.
Assist with routine Lab tasks (e.g. washing of glassware, changing of gas cylinders, checking and ordering of consumables, waste disposal).
Undertake regular quality control and assurance tasks on scientific equipment and analytical instruments (e.g. balances, pipettes, dispensers etc.).
Contribute to and assist in updating and maintaining standard operating procedures and manuals for analytical and laboratory equipment.
Implement standards and controls to achieve consistently reliable outputs.
Perform standard maintenance on instruments to ensure optimal performance.
Assist with developing a proactive safety culture and implement continuous improvement.
Other duties, as reasonable directed by the supervisor.
This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 2 years.
At HEW level 5, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $77,396.47 - $86,029.78, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $90,553.87 - $100,654.84 annually. As these roles are covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.
About You
Completion of a relevant degree in chemistry or related field activities or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
Knowledge of analytical chemistry particularly related to environmental and water analyses.
Technical capabilities in equipment such as GC, HPLC, IC, TOC, FIA, ICP-OES or similar instruments with the ability to operate, maintain analytical equipment to achieve reliable, high-quality analytical results.
Experience with data analysis and critical assessment from analytical procedures.
Knowledge of legislative requirements and operating procedures for scientific safety such as quarantine procedures, waste disposal, labelling and risk assessment.
Problem-solving skills, with an ability to forward plan, prioritise tasks to meet deadlines and work with a high level of adaptability, both independently and as part of a team.
Interpersonal and communication skills with ability to produce clear, succinct documentation and the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of stakeholders in a research environment.
