About This Opportunity 

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Speech Pathologist to join our world-leading School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. Working in the Queensland Aphasia Research Centre (QARC), you will provide clinical research support to various projects including the evaluation of the Comprehensive, High-dose Aphasia Treatment (CHAT) and CHAT-Maintain projects, delivery of the TeleCHAT program and support the activities of the QARC Aphasia Tech Hub.

QARC is a University of Queensland Centre in partnership with Metro North Health. The University of Queensland and Metro North Health formed the STARS Research and Education Alliance with a goal to lead innovation in care, training and research in specialist surgical and complex rehabilitation services. The partnership embeds clinical education and research to achieve improved outcomes for people with complex rehabilitation needs.

Reporting to Professor David Copland, and physically based at the Queensland Aphasia Research Centre (QARC ) located within Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS ), a specialist public health facility at the Herston Health Precinct, this is an exciting opportunity to play a crucial role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality clinical research outcomes for CHAT, CHAT-Maintain, TeleCHAT and for the Aphasia Tech Hub.

Core responsibilities include: 

  • Supporting the conduct of clinical aphasia research in a hospital environment including participant recruitment, consenting, and education about research processes to facilitate high quality data collection.

  • Conducting research assessments and research language therapy programs as part of CHAT, CHAT-Maintain, TeleCHAT and Aphasia Tech Hub projects, to adults with post-stroke aphasia within a clinical research framework.

  • Maintaining a high standard of administrative, communication and consultative skills to work independently and effectively with other research team members, research participants, and multi-disciplinary health service staff.

  • Adhering to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and any other regulatory guidelines and requirements including adverse events and serious adverse event reporting.

  • Maintaining a high standard of assessment and therapy records including review and scoring of data, data entry, and analysis for reporting on research outcomes.

  • Providing clinical advice to the QARC Director and research team regarding service delivery, improvement opportunities and enhancement of the CHAT, CHAT-Maintain, TeleCHAT and Aphasia Tech Hub activities.

  • Provision of clinical research support to enhance skills, knowledge, confidence and build research capacity in the speech pathology team within STARS and ensure maintenance of professional standards in data collection across various projects.

Research Management

  • Provision of regular progress reports to the QARC director and clinical trial coordinator including any issues related to recruitment, study progress, ethical considerations, or any constraints arising within clinical research projects.

  • Establishing strong working relationships with support departments to ensure effective management of payments and reconciliation of research budgets.

  • Collaborating with researchers to develop high quality research grant proposals, including provision of technical information on budgets and project management, sourcing information, revision and editing of proposals for content.

  • Preparing, submitting and maintaining records of applications across various ethics committees, research governance and site authorisations, Public Health Act authority and other relevant bodies.

  • Providing regular progress reports to the Research Director and clinical trial coordinator including any issues related to recruitment, study progress, ethical considerations, or any constraints arising within clinical research projects.

Advocacy and Networks

  • Actively participating and contributing to clinical research networks including the QARC clinical forum.

  • Advocating for clinical aphasia research and optimising opportunities for clinical aphasia research to be enhanced in STARS and in wider clinical networks.

  • Monitoring and maintaining the research group’s outward facing activities including social media accounts, website, webinars, and newsletters. Identify and collaborate with key clinical stakeholders, liaising and maintaining relationships with multi-disciplinary health service staff.

  • Establishing effective networks with key university stakeholders to identify untapped funding sources and linking researchers with opportunities appropriate to their research needs.

About You  

As a Research Speech Pathologist, you will possess the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Completion of a tertiary qualification in Speech Pathology, with at least four (4) years subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

  • Eligible for Speech Pathology Australia membership.

  • Eligible for clinician credentialling within participating QLD Health facilities.

  • Clinical interest and experience in working with people with aphasia and the ability to apply high level clinical knowledge and skills to deliver a comprehensive evidence-based aphasia program including impairment, functional and computer-based approaches.

  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal skills to develop strong working relationships, deal with any clinical research issues sensitively and assertively and the ability to interact with a diverse range of colleagues, research participants and stakeholders.

  • A high level of computer literacy including the Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills, including the ability to set priorities, manage time, plan work to meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure.

  • Demonstrated analytical and research skills including the ability to undertake high quality data collection and analysis.

  • A demonstrated understanding of confidentiality, privacy and information handling principles in accordance with relevant ethics requirements.

It is advantageous for you to possess:

  • Skills and experience in clinical aphasia management via telehealth and using aphasia treatment software.

  • Prior experience with clinical research.

What We Can Offer 

This is a full-time (or part-time negotiable), fixed-term position through to 31 December 2023 at HEW Level 7. 

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $90,538 - $98,719 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $105,929 - $115,501 per annum.
