The Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics is a national infrastructure facility and a leader in the application and development of genomics in Australia. It is the largest genomics facility at any Australian University and is comprehensively equipped with the latest next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, with single-cell genomics platforms and with high throughput microarray systems. The Centre’s purpose is to deliver high quality genomic data to its clients and position UNSW as a leader in the field of genomics.

The Research Officer position is responsible for providing Sanger Sequencing services and NGS laboratory support at the Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics. The role of Research Officer reports to the Deputy Director/COO and has 1 direct report. The position is for a one-year maternity leave cover.


About the role

  • $90K - $96K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 13 months (MAT leave cover)
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Provide technical and project design advice to clients for Sanger sequencing.
  • Provide project costing and prepare quotes for clients.
  • Apply technical knowledge and expertise to resolve issues.
  • Prepare samples for Sanger sequencing and NGS analysis.
  • Responsible for operating and maintaining the AB 3730 Sanger sequencer, including overseeing any repair for the instrument.
  • Manage resources including staff to ensure the Sanger service is run efficiently and cost effectively and that data is delivered in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for reagent and consumable inventory and ordering.
  • Undertake quality control checks on nucleic acid samples and libraries, to support NGS services in the Centre.
  • Prepare monthly billing summary for administrative support to bill clients.
  • Perform other appropriate duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director/COO.

  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or  others.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics or a related discipline. This position requires a good understanding of the principles of molecular biology and Sanger sequencing.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and hands-on experience in Sanger sequencing and/or other high-throughput molecular biology techniques.
  • Ability to use initiative and work both independently, as well as part of a team to deliver project outcomes.
  • The ability to manage time effectively to deliver results for concurrent workflows.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
  • Experience in supervising staff is desirable.
  • Work experience in an accredited or regulated laboratory is desirable.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and
  • safety training.
