The Research Officer (Nurse) will support a component of the NHMRC PROGRESSA study by coordinating the recruitment of study participants, taking blood samples, conducting Ophthalmic assessments including visual acuity and fundus examination and maintaining detailed records of data.
New research directions will include investigating cardiovascular risk factors with home monitors, and recruiting a large population of normal older Australians.
The incumbent will receive general to broad direction from her/his supervisor and, in the main, will determine her/his own priorities and work plans consistent with the objectives of the work unit. The incumbent is also expected to operate within a framework of established policies and work systems. Both specific and broad outcomes are reviewed.
The incumbent is expected to consult with her/his supervisor on matters where activity cannot easily be determined by reference to past practices or established procedures.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Research Officer (Nurse) is accountable for:

  • Coordinating the recruitment of study participants including taking blood samples, and the conduct of study questionnaires.

  • Conducting ophthalmic assessments, including visual acuity and fundus examination, and cardiovascular risk profiles. Performing retinal imaging (OCT, fundus photography).

  • Referring patients and coordinate access to care for those that require further ophthalmic follow up and treatment.

  • Entry of data to maintain detailed records, and under supervision, may perform data analysis.

  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • Currently registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Nurse

  • Demonstrated experience in taking blood samples.

  • Demonstrated, well developed patient care skills, coupled with a high level of confidentiality in the handling of sensitive and confidential information.

  • Experience and competency in the use of computer applications for data management and analysis.

  • Demonstrated well-developed written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated well -developed organisational skills including the ability to exercise initiative, prioritise, problem solve and meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Prescribed Conditions for Employment

A valid National Police Certificate which is satisfactory to the University will also be required before the successful applicant can commence in this position.
