About the Role 

Working under broad direction, the Research Funding Officer will be responsible for supporting researchers in the development of research funding proposals and tenders and in assisting with the coordination of contract research projects. The role provides advice and services to ensure that funding proposals/tenders are of a high quality, commercially competitive, fulfil the requirements of the relevant funding rules, and meet key deadlines. This includes costing research projects, initial population of tender documents and/or project proposals to potential funders and coordination of internal documentation and approvals.

Core Responsibilities 

  • Delivery of respected and accessible support to UniSA researchers, with the focus on HERDC Category (Cat) 2 and 3 research funding schemes, including competitive tenders, international funding schemes and approaches by industry for Contract Research. This will include:
    • Collaboration with the Research Coordinators, Enterprise Partnership Team and Advancement Services to identify, promote and support the translation of funding opportunities into competitive, and compelling, research funding proposals/applications;
    • Providing advice and active support on the development of research project budgets and milestone tables, reviewing, editing and providing feedback to researchers;
    • Providing advice, and direction, on funding schemes, guidelines, rules or conditions of awards to assist researchers, and UniSA’s collaborators, to comply with funder requirements on aspects such as eligibility, word counts, available funds and critical dates; and
    • Supporting researchers to develop and strengthen funding applications by delivering or facilitating targeted experiential training and workshops to facilitate knowledge sharing and support from across UniSA
  • Support the UniSA Expression of Interest and application approval processes for Cat 2 and 3 applications including ensuring data accuracy within internal research management and finance systems, and timely liaison with other teams within RIS
  • Provide support to the Research Projects Development team in peak application times for other research grant or funding schemes
  • Provide exceptional customer service, engagement and clearly communicate with researchers and all internal and external stakeholders, including the University’s valued partners, to facilitate a productive and collaborative approach to the complex environment of funding development at the University

Essential Skills and Experience
  • Tertiary qualifications and experience or equivalent experience in a research administration/finance environment
  • Broad knowledge in identifying Government, Not-for-Profit and Industry funding opportunities and an ability to translate these into building research income and impact  
  • High level of financial literacy and project design capability with demonstrated proficiency in the preparation of funding and tender proposal development including price and costing for budget and milestone development
  • Demonstrated experience and capability implementing continuous improvement and efficiencies in business processes
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret policies, procedures, and funding requirements of external agencies
