About the opportunity

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) draws together a diversity of disciplines involved in the study of living things, creating a rich multidisciplinary environment and integrating knowledge and expertise across disciplines to advance the understanding of life – from molecules and cells to whole organisms to entire ecosystems. Our researchers work in rapidly advancing and technologically innovative fields of science that have real world applications in health, medicine, veterinary science, agriculture and environmental systems.

The University is seeking to employ a Research Fellow to assist in the marine ecological research for the Antarctic SAEF project. A research program dedicated to the conservation of the Antarctic-

SAEF is an Antarctic research program, funded by the Australian Research Council as a Special Research Initiative. Established in 2021, the mission is to understand the changes taking place across the Antarctic region – to its climate and its biodiversity – and develop innovative ways to forecast, mitigate and manage these changes. 

The incumbent will apply and refines their expertise in research methodologies, design and delivery to contribute to the university's standing as a national leader in the discipline and will be located on the Camperdown Campus within the Macleay Building.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Conduct original research independently or as part of a team, focusing on publication, conference presentations, and securing research funding

  • maintain a research profile, including publication of book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference and/or seminar papers

  • develop research collaborations and engage in translational research that result in knowledge or technology transfer leading to commercialisation, improved policy or practice, or enhancement to industry, the profession or community

  • contribute to applications for competitive research grants or funding to deliver research impact

  • contribute to a positive workplace culture in which diversity of thought, contribution, collaboration, excellence and achieving outcomes are valued and enabled.

About you

  • Academic qualifications - In a relevant field

  • doctorate or PhD - In a relevant field

  • a developing network of academic, industry and professional partners and stakeholders

  • a developing research profile in discipline or area of expertise

  • proven experience conducting original research and engaging in scholarly activity

  • proven experience supervising and mentoring others.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the reasons for the position.
