About the opportunity

Opportunity for a Research Fellow to join the team at General Practice Clinical School in the Sydney Medical School. The Research Fellow will join a small but growing research team led by Senior Lecturer Marguerite Tracy .

The Sydney Medical School established 1856, aims to improve health through education, research and clinical care. The Sydney Medical School is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney which is home to the largest and most comprehensive assembly of health research in the Asia Pacific. It conducts cutting-edge research across the full spectrum of health and medical knowledge, from the medical sciences through to clinical medicine, public health, and medical education.

 

General Practice (GP) is a cornerstone of the Australian primary health care system and fundamental to health and wellbeing in our society. Our General Practice Clinical School sits within Sydney Medical School, alongside six metropolitan hospital-based clinical schools and three rural clinical schools throughout NSW. Our General Practice Clinical School has academic and professional staff across the metropolitan area and has strong links with rural clinical school academics and the Community and Primary Health Care Network within the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

The successful applicant will work on a project funded through a Medical Research Future Fund grant. The Research Fellow Level B will help coordinate and undertake data collection, data interpretation and development of publications. The Research Focused Academic applies and refines their expertise in research methodologies, design and delivery to contribute to the University's standing as a national leader in the discipline. They engage in research either independently or as part of a research team.

This Research-focused academic at Level B is expected to apply and develop their expertise in conducting research. They will conduct research and/or scholarly activities under the limited supervision of the team leader and other senior academic staff, either independently or as part of a research team.

Your key responsibilities will be to:                       

  • work closely with the team leader and other chief investigators of the MRFF project.

  • to work independently and as part of the research team, to undertake qualitative /quantitative research, including data collection, analysis and writing up of results

  • to undertake qualitative research field work independently, during few trips to onsite Western Sydney LHD area- primary care – general practitioners in Western Sydney over 3 years, with phone and online support as needed.

  • assist in the development and publication of a systematic scoping review.

  • coordinate the project investigator meetings and workshops and assist in coordinating the group meetings.

  • provide informal mentoring and guidance to lower-level academics and supervise postgraduate research students or projects where appropriate.

  • assist in all activities related to conduct of the research including in the reviewing and updating of research protocols and related documents, and in coordinating reporting to human research ethics committees

  • assist to build and maintain strategic relationships by liaising, consulting, and negotiating with internal and external stakeholders to identify key issues.

About you

  • hold a PhD in a relevant discipline (health related field with a preference of health services research)

  • 3-4 years of demonstrated experience working in a research role with a comparable level of responsibility

  • experience developing and contributing to research evidence by producing original, high quality and independent research

  • demonstrated ability to perform qualitative data analyses, ethics application etc.

  • ability to communicate effectively across a range of forums

  • experience in the development of academic manuscripts or report writing

  • accuracy, attention to detail and highly organized, with the ability to work according to strict deadlines and manage various demands

  • strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement and ability to prioritise workload during busy periods 

  • ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
