About the team

Power and Clean Energy Research Group (PACE) is an established research group in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, School of Engineering in University of Western Australia (UWA).

PACE is housed in a dedicated building on UWA’s main campus in Perth and hosts one of Australia’s largest cohort of researchers in power system, smart grid and renewable energy areas. Researchers in PACE focus on cutting edge research spanning power systems, power electronics, smart grid and renewable energy to address key challenges nationally and internationally. PACE has recently been funded by a CRC Future Battery Industry project on Microgrid Battery Deployment. The project aims to develop next-generation battery energy management systems (BEMS), which in addition to providing significant performance, safety and lifetime improvements, modularise the deployment of batteries and create a simplified, mass-producible battery building block which will result in reduced engineering effort, onsite installation, reduced maintenance, and high volume production / economies of scale. The project also aims to develop a coordinated control approach for battery systems to provide interoperability and electrical stability in microgrids

About the opportunity

As a Research Associate in PACE, you will work under the supervision of the Professor to develop an optimization algorithm to realize economic microgrid operation while ensuring the health of battery energy storage. Drawing on your experience with experimental studies you will also test the algorithm in real microgrid scenarios.

You will collaborate with diverse groups to develop integrated research while supporting the transfer of research results into practice and into UWA’s undergraduate and postgraduate course offerings.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate :

  • PhD in Electrical /Electronic Engineering or related discipline
  • Relevant research experience in the control of solar PV generation and battery in microgrids.
