• Salary Package: Level B (PhD), from $110, 274 to $130,472 p.a, plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading
• Appointment Type: Fixed-term, Full time (12 month appointment)

THE ROLE

The Department of History and Archaeology, Macquarie University is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow, who will undertake the study of glass held by the Macquarie University History Museum. The appointee will have knowledge of Roman artefacts including Roman glass and wider knowledge of ancient glass. The research fellow will scope opportunities for the development of publications based on the Roman glass collection, that may include collaboration with other colleagues, including those from the Faculty of Science and Engineering to undertake analyses, and/or develop a better understanding of the provenance of these artefacts. In addition, the research fellow will initiate a programme of digitisation of the collection and to develop a digital exhibition by the end of the 12 month period of employment.

ABOUT YOU

You will be a highly motivated academic with a PhD in artefact studies of the ancient world, or in a relevant field (e.g. Archaeology) and experience of working with objects donated to museums; as well as a record of collaboration in research and public engagement, including with external stakeholders. You should have a developing portfolio of publications in high-ranked journals or with prestigious publishers. Your interpersonal skills and communication should be of a high standard and you should be committed to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity, and also understand its application in both Higher Education and the context of museums. Knowledge of and understanding of the issues around provenance research, as well as the opportunities for the deployment of scientific techniques for the study of artefacts, are expected of candidates for this post.

Established in 2020, the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University is an interdisciplinary research-focused department with a reputation for teaching excellence, whose researchers solve key challenges facing us in the present through ethical engagement with the past. The Department is dedicated to training students who appreciate the interconnectedness of the ancient world, particularly within the Mediterranean, Near Eastern and north African regions. The Department is housed in the Arts Precinct, which also houses the Macquarie University History Museum (which holds the largest collections of ancient glass in the Southern Hemisphere), and state-of-the-art media facilities. The Department has extensive experience of developing and delivering Object-Based-Learning utilising the collection based in the Macquarie University History Museum.

Our experts in cultures from the earliest states to the modern world provide training in Ancient and Modern History and Archaeology in both specialist degrees (in Ancient History and in Archaeology) and majors in the Bachelor of Arts. In addition, the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies (ACANS), also housed in the Arts precinct, holds the largest collection of Roman and Southern Italian coins in the Southern Hemisphere and has developed a collaboration with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) in the deployment of cutting edge science for the study of numismatics.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in a relevant field;

  • Demonstrated experience in high-quality research and scholarship, which may be evidenced by an internationally competitive publication record and success in attracting research support;

  • Prior research focused on objects held within museum collections leading to publications in prestigious journals;

  • Demonstrated ability to undertake provenance-based research on objects held in museum collections;

  • Ability to identify opportunities for scientific analyses of objects leading to publications in high-ranked journals;

  • A capacity to enhance the University's reputation through engagement with relevant external stakeholders;

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a record of working collaboratively with fellow academic and professional staff;

  • Commitment to and knowledge of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity and its application in Higher Education;

Desirable Criteria

  • A record of interdisciplinary research and collaboration across disciplines;

  • Demonstrated knowledge of ancient glass or faience making, in the period c. 1450 BCE to 1000 CE;

  • Reading knowledge of Italian;

  • Experience of the development of public engagement and research impact;

  • Experience working with Museum collections and Museum professionals and/or with others in the wider Galleries, Museums, Archives and Libraries (GLAM) sector;

  • Experience of working within digital research and teaching environments and/or participation in Digital Humanities projects.
