The Post-doctoral Research Fellow will initiate and conduct research in the areas of harmful digital marketing to children and youth and global health. Specifically, the Research Fellow will coordinate the #DigitalYouth study, which will involve recruiting and collecting video digital use data from 300 children and youth and work collaboratively with the Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation to apply Artificial Intelligence techniques to identify harmful marketing (unhealthy food, alcohol, gambling, e-cigarettes) in this data. The work will build on a proof-of-concept system already developed by the research team.

The RF is also expected to contribute to global work on malnutrition in all its forms, particularly in South Asia (Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives), including capacity building with UN agencies.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Initiating and conducting research independently to achieve the objectives of the #DigitalYouth study and global work with UN agencies
  • Personally, and through active participation in teams, preparing and developing grant applications relating to the projects, and contributing to the preparation, or where appropriate, individual preparation of research proposal submissions to external funding bodies
  • Constructively contributing to the maintenance of a vibrant research team by guiding the research effort of junior colleagues.
  • Promoting the activities of the University, particularly those relating to research and research training, within academic and professional communities in Australia
  • The day-to-day administration of the #DigitalYouth study
  • Study protocol development
  • Leading and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to collect and analyse data using artificial intelligent systems techniques
  • Preparing research reports and academic publications associated with the #DigitalYouth project and other relevant projects, in conjunction with other team members
  • Liaising on a regular basis with the project team and other researchers connected with relevant projects nationally and internationally
  • Completing any milestones and producing any reports and other deliverables by the dates specified by the funder
  • Remaining up-to-date with current literature and methods relevant to the area of responsibility

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • A tertiary qualification at PhD level or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated skills in the coordination of data collection, data entry and analysis using both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct high quality research.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with collaborators and external parties in a highly professional manner.
  • High level written skills.
  • Superb interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact well with researchers, administrators, and government officials.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and task orientation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated organisational skills including the ability to maintain a high standard of data record keeping and ability to meet competing deadlines.
  • Experience with standard computer software packages (e.g. Windows, Microsoft).
