About the team
The WA Centre for Rural Health (WACRH) is one of 17 Commonwealth-funded University Departments of Rural Health (UDRH) in Australia, and is located in the Midwest and Pilbara regions of Western Australia.
WACRH’s mission is to collaborate in: (i) the promotion and preparation of students for health careers in a rural setting; (ii) innovative rural learning opportunities of students, health professionals and the community; and (iii) rigorous applied research and knowledge translation aimed at optimising the health and wellbeing of rural communities.
About the opportunity
The position is working on a research project aiming to improve communication between health care clinicians (doctors, nurses, allied health professionals) and Aboriginal patients in the WA Country Health Services (WACHS) – Midwest region. The project will implement Clinical Yarning – a patient-centred framework for communication in Aboriginal health care (see: https://www.publish.csiro.au/py/Fulltext/PY16051 ) - by training and supporting health care clinicians, and undertaking research to understand what effect this has on clinicians, patients and health care services.
This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of a team on a project with the potential to improve health care in Midwest WA, with relevance across Australia. The work is based in Geraldton, a large regional centre in Western Australia that enjoys excellent climate and cultural, educational and recreational facilities.
The Western Australian Centre for Rural Health (WACRH) is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary academic centre working to improve the health of rural, remote and First Nations people through a unique collaboration of all five Western Australian universities. It has a strong collaborative ethos and the project is working in close collaboration with WACHS.
To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:
- An undergraduate, Honours, Masters degree or PhD in a health or related field
- Experience in health/health services research, using qualitative and/or quantitative methods
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a research team and diverse stakeholders
- Highly developed and effective interpersonal and communication skills
- Good organisational skills
- Ability to prepare project reports and/or manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals
- Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal health and health services and/or implementation research
