The Crawford School of Public Policy is one of the world’s leading public policy schools, and is the University's focal point for contributing to public policy research, education and policy impact. Its graduate programs have trained many of the region’s leaders, and its research has impacted on policy making. Public policy scholarship at Crawford School is characterized by high quality, policy-relevant research across a range of disciplines.

The Resources, Environment and Development (RE&D) program at the Crawford School carries out research and teaching focused on the social and economic aspects of environmental and resource management in Australia and the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. RE&D brings together a group of leading academics from a range of disciplinary backgrounds including anthropology, geography, economics, political science, and environmental studies. The group has two strong Masters programs in Environmental Management and Development, as well as Climate Change, which it aims to renew and extend in the coming years. It also teaches into other Crawford and ANU postgraduate programs.

The Opportunity
This position is part of a collaborative project with between the RE&D program and the Australian Centre for Space Governance (ACSG), which is a national centre of humanities expertise to support Australia’s space capacity.

The mission of the ACSG is to advocate for Australia’s interests in space in the 21st century and to support the Australian community to understand and advance Australia's interests in space in the 21st century. It does so through three key pillars:

  •  Serve the nation's space law and governance needs
  •  Provide space law and governance education nationally
  •  Produce interdisciplinary research to solve national and global space governance challenges

The Research Fellow will contribute to a research agenda through a project led by the ACGS, on the responsible governance of Earth observation satellite data, including undertaking research on data integrity monitoring and wider governance issues in the space sector.

Our Ideal Candidate
We welcome applications from scholars with an interest in governance of freshwater resources in Australia and South-East Asia and/or an interest in Indigenous governance of waters, and an interest in or a desire to learn more about satellite data governance and the challenges and opportunities in the wider field of space governance.  Given the nature of the role, the ideal candidate is an independent researcher who embraces interdisciplinary perspectives and works well in small teams.

While this is a research-intensive role, all academic staff within the College are expected to undertake work in three areas of academic activity - education (teaching and learning), research and service (including outreach). The allocation of time to each area will reflect relative opportunities within the School and/or discipline, as well as individual appointment situations. This expectation applies regardless of the level of appointment, the type of appointment an academic holds, or the part of the University in which an academic may have begun their career at ANU.

What we offer

  • The opportunity to work with world-class researchers and build networks with a diverse group of stakeholders
