Centre for Exploration Geophysics

The Exploration Geophysics team at Curtin University specialises in developing geophysical technologies for subsurface characterisation and monitoring, focusing on CO2 geosequestration, groundwater management, and environmental and energy applications.

Your new role

In this role you will contribute to several collaborative projects between Curtin University, industry and research partners. You will primarily contribute to research-based activities, including development of new data analysis algorithms, processing and analysis of field data, and participation in the fieldwork.


In this role you will:
  • Conduct high-quality research in applications of the distributed fibre optic sensing in close collaboration with other team members.
  • Develop algorithms for automated data analysis of data obtained using fibre optic technology.
  • Contribute to planning, design and implementation of field experiments to collect high quality data for research projects utilising fibre optic sensors and other geophysical equipment.
  • Process surface and borehole seismic data recorded using fibre optic sensors as well as conventional receivers.
  • Report on the research progress and outcomes to research partners and geophysical community through research reports, journal papers and conference presentations
  • Participate in collaborative activities with professional bodies, industry partners, affiliated associations and the wider community.

You will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role.

Please provide a cover letter, your CV and separate document addressing the selection criteria (noted below) to allow us to assess your suitability for this role.

Selection criteria:

  • A doctoral qualification (or near completion) in geophysics or a related area.
  • Proficient programming skills using MATLAB and Python.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of algorithms for automated seismic data processing and analysis, including downhole geometries.
  • Demonstrate strong IT skills.
  • Experience in downhole seismic data acquisition and analysis, hands-on field skills operating surface and downhole sources and receivers.
  • Demonstrate experience in designing and implementing geophysical surveys (including but not limited to seismic surveys with fibre optic sensors).
  • Demonstrate technical knowledge of principles of distributed fibre optic sensing technology, including both basic theory and hands-on skills operating interrogators for DAS and DTS as well as handling the fibre.
  • A track record in scientific publications and presentations in the field of distributed fibre optic sensing in geophysical, environmental and/or engineering applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
